Dancing bears, painted wings, things I almost remember, and a song, someone sings, once upon a December.

Darkness. It surrounded you. So immense that your mind couldn’t breathe under its suffocating weight.

You called out.

No one answered.

Thousands of questions swirled around in your dimly lit conscious. You could remember nothing except a few faint impressions, lost in feeling.

Someone holds me safe and warm, horses prance through a silver storm. Figures dancing gracefully across my memory.

Where did you know that song from? Its melody was so familiar.

That’s right. It was a song that was sung to you when you were scared or couldn’t sleep.

Your last memory wafts by you like a long forgotten dream. You were dancing at a military ball with a handsome young man whose name you can’t remember. You were having a lovely time but, towards the end as you were leaving, something happened.

Far away, long ago, glowing dim as an ember. Things my heart used to know, things it yearns to remember.

Your mind was blocking it from you but as the song continued, a few more memories resurfaced like a corpse being unearthed from a hidden grave.

Someone holds me safe and warm,

The handsome young man…you now remembered his name. It was Levi.

Horses prance through a silver storm,

It was snowing outside. You were getting ready to leave when another man came and asked you to dance. You accepted. Levi broke between the two of you and punched the other man in the mouth, then turned and yelled at you.

You were hurt that Levi felt he couldn’t trust you. ‘We were just dancing!’ you screamed back angrily. You twirled away in your dress and ran past the other couples, out into the snow storm.

He chased after you and that’s when…

Far away, long ago, glowing dim as an ember.

He was hit by a car after he pushed you out of the way.

Things my heart used to know…

He died instantly. You remember picking him up and holding him in your arms, blinded by tears.

Things it yearns to remember. And a song, someone sings,

Where did you know this song from? Oh right, Levi used to sing it to you when you were scared or… But wait, if Levi's dead, who is singing it to you now?

You open your eyes and are blinded by a bright light. You see Levi reaching out to you, smiling.

And then everything came rushing back.

While holding Levi, you were hit by a second car that was trying to avoid the first. Levi died in order to save you when in all reality, he only gave you a few more seconds. But, you used those seconds well. You held him in your arms one last time and remembered how much you still loved him despite all that happened...on that fateful night…
