Description
I am officially in love with my markers. I don't know why I stopped using them, but now that I'm back with a bit more color theory and experience under my belt... ooooooh baby.Colored pencils cannot do Spiderman justice. Markers- good, high-quality markers- are what's really needed to get the richly saturated colors right.
So yeah. After inking the lines on this, I decided on a whim to dig out my old ZIG Memory System Twin Tip markers, which I rarely touch. Mom gave me the sets years ago, probably hoping that I'd use them in pursuit of scrapbooking as a hobby. (I love my mom
I'll be digging these markers out again.
For now, Otto is foiled in his escape by the friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Spidey and Ock are in marker, the background in colored pencil.

I love your coloring technique. I love how the tentacles seem to have depth to them with the shading.
It needs more 'shadows' but, other wise it's really good. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

I don't really see any shadows but a few for darkened areas. I love the coloring on Spider-man, although his body looks a bit feminine in the way it bends. I'm not seeing alot of muscles. He still looks very good though.

Did you use any perspective on this? Just curious

Oh there's all kinds of perspective here.
Size/Detail: Otto's close to the camera, so he appears much larger than Spidey. The actuator segments closest to the camera are also larger than the ones further away. The buildings are also arranged by size- the one right behind Spidey is larger and more detailed than the others. Otto's also more detailed than Spidey, overall, and the actuator parts closest to the foreground are also the most detailed.
Color: The brightest, reddest, most saturated colors are in the characters in the foreground, done with markers. The building behind Spidey is still red, but it's a little more faded becuase it was done with colored pencils, while the distant buildings are in bluer tones- distance tends to sap out the yellows and reds from objects, which is why mountains tend to look blue or purple. It's a function of the chemical makeup of our atmosphere. This is a subtler technique and best used in showing objects that are really far away.
Angle: The camera is slightly tilted for a more dynamic effect. This is perspective in the 'point of view' definition.
3D effects (what you're probably thinking when you say 'perspective'): the rectangular prism shapes that make up the distant buildings are lined up with a distant vanishing point, so their angles are not precisely 90 degrees as they would be in real life. The frames of the windows and the ridge on the foreground building are slightly wider on the right side of the frame than the left, indicating that the camera isn't aimed straight on at the building, but a bit more to the left. Spidey's lower legs are bent so they're more behind him, so his feet look smaller and you don't see the entire length of the shins and calves.
Overlap: Mo's claw in the foreground overlaps Spidey's foot, indicating that it's closer than he is. Flo overlaps the actuator holding the precioustritium. Spidey's left arm is extended out in front of his body, overlapping part of his abdomen and pelvis. The actuator segments overlap one another- as the tentacles curve, the angles you view the segments at change.
Be careful when you ask for perspective- it can describe a lot of differant techniques, because 'perspective' in art basically means showing which objects are closer to the viewer than others. There's a bunch of differant ways to do that.

Oh. Well I know about over-lap, just wasn't sure if it was 2-point one point and all that jazz.

Wow! I gotta admit; I love how the tentacles turned out, and I love how the marker details turn out.
I'm totally
ing this.
By the way, where do you get the ZIG Markers?

ASDFGH -goes into fangirl coma-
-points- Hey lookie, Larry's got some precioustritium. 8D (At least I think it's Larry. It's a little confusing when Otto's facing you. D| Not to mention I get confused way too easily.)
All Ottophilic spazzing aside, you did Spidey justice here. I know from personal experience just how hard the webslinger can be to draw... and you colored him to boot! Excellence indeed. Did you manage to pull that off without a reference to look at while drawing him? O_O

SilverGryphon8 In reply to Chraelix [2010-02-03 00:49:02 +0000 UTC]
*giggles* It's Harry, actually. Larry's the one whose claw you can just barely see, and there's a little bit of the tentacle visible on Otto's other side- Larry's curved around Otto's side and across his front to reach out for the next claw-hold. Yes, that is precioustritium.
*grins* I did the anatomy without a reference, though I had to use one for the costume details, since it was the first time I've drawn him in-costume.

ARGH! Dangit, I knew I'd get it wrong. <_< Ah well. It was a 50/50 chance for it anyway.
But still. eeehee hee precioustritium, precious. I think the next time my art class breaks out the clay, I'mma make myself a lil tritium... and maybe make it into a necklace? That way I can have tritium with me all the time. WIN! Just using a reference for costume details is amazing. <_< Every time I try drawing him without something to look at for posing, it fails.

*squees* I wanna precioustritium necklace! You didn't see just how many times I erased him before I got a pose I liked. I've been practicing anatomy for my own comic. Glad to see it's paying off.

-steeples fingers and taps them together- It's just a matter of time now... -lets off an evil cackle- The precioustritium will be mine, precious...
... <_< I really should practice posing and anatomy at some point instead of drawing actuators all over my notes.

Mneh, not so much. I draw very simple shortcut actuators most of the time... think "Doctor is In" style. I'd like to get better at the movie-style... but before that, I need to schlorp my sister's Spidey 2 DVD away from her so I can study it. For months on end. Yes. That's it. And moar Spidey comics.
... my sister is like my source for everything awesome in this world.

It's good to have resources
The movie tentacles do differ greatly from the comics, so good luck with them. They've got this wierd triple-lobed shape... pain in the arse to draw.

Chraelix In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-02-04 13:55:25 +0000 UTC]
No kidding. Mostly what I want to practice though is the movie version's claws... the triple lobed thing isn't too terribly much of a problem with me, even though it could probably use some work. Its just the claws that always fail when I try to draw them. <_<

*pokes Otto's face* *giggles* Expression = win. I dunno why, but I just love it. And I love the yellow on the "underbelly" of the actuators. I dunno why.
There are a lot of things I dunno why I love them. I just do! <3 Great job, Silver!

SilverGryphon8 In reply to StalkerFanGirl [2010-02-02 23:38:06 +0000 UTC]
*grins at Stalker* The yellow came out a bit brighter than it should have, but I like to think that the black-and-yellow draws attention to them in the pick like a bunch of poisonous snakes. They actually do have a yellow stripe in the film, which is where I got it from.
I love drawing that man's face. He's got an awesome face, and he's become one of the few men I can draw at all well
Thanks!

StalkerFanGirl In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-02-02 23:50:23 +0000 UTC]
Really? I've never noticed the stripe! Now I gotta go rewatch it! But that's true, about the color. It's like...red and black, friend of JAck. Something and yellow killed a fellow. (Childhood rhymes ftw!) XD
He does have some awesome faces. :3

SilverGryphon8 In reply to StalkerFanGirl [2010-02-03 00:44:22 +0000 UTC]
Red against black, poison lack. Red against yellow, bite a fellow. I love those little rhymes.
The stripes are easiest to see in the shots in the lab, when the actuators are revealed for the first time. And don't worry- it took me ages to notice them myself

I find watercolors a royal pain to work with- I don't have the patience to let them dry and my paper always gets wrinkled Mom's turned to trying to get my sister onto watercolors, having apparently realized that I have no fondness for using her favorite medium.
Thank you! ^_^ That's probably one of the highest compliments I've ever gotten on a piece. I'm thrilled with the marker effect and the color saturation...
Is it appropriate to fangirl-squee over an art tool?
