Story (written by TerracottaVulture ):

Many long days of solitude have passed. When a newfound taste for literature and the company of a loyal ride are the only solace one can have in the desolate desert. To ride, to eat and to rest. The challenges have been many, but no amount of survivalist training could prepare someone whose batteries are charged through social contact. Such is the fate of Edward. The social sunflower, as his mother calls him. A joyful young man, alone in the desert. He has given up keeping his beard trimmed. A little too dramatic, perhaps. The tan would certainly impress back home, in Scotland, land of the pale! His mare, Idaho, although loyal, is not very talkative…to say the least. At times it seems she even rolls her eyes at the snarky comments and dad-jokes Edward is now incapable of keeping to himself. Jokes so dry it can be dangerous when traversing the desert.

However, the desert hides far more dangerous scenarios.

During what he thought would be the second to last 2 mile stretch of the day, Edward hears a muffled rumbling. Other riders? Looking around him, he can't see silhouettes, nor even dust trails. Something is off! He checks the time and weather forecast on the handy-dandy satellite phone. Mid afternoon and clear skies. But then…?

-"...why is it getting darker?"

Idaho's demeanour begins to change rapidly, it's now a fight to stay still. Once again Edward scouts the horizon. Idaho is a protector, she knows when to flight and Ed has learned to trust his mare.

The rumbling grows.

With the binoculars he is able to find the source of the noise: a cloud of locusts approaches…rapidly!

He loosens the reins, finally allowing Idaho to take off galloping away from danger at full speed. Adrenaline rushes! Edward has no choice but to trust that his horse can race them to the safety of the hills. Nearing a valley between the rocky hills, ahead a group of riders had set up tents. They shout, wave clothes and even fire gunshots to signal him their way.

A safe heaven in the desert!

The swarm has now passed by. Riders and their horses begin to emerge from within the tents.

The communal camp starts to take shape, quickly riders join together as some start fires for the night, while others bring out bedrolls, blankets and even pillows. Everyone brings forth a supply of food, willingly or "willingl'ed" by peer pressure. A small group gathers knives, spoons and pans to prepare supper for the 10 or so tired riders.

First priority, Leslie lets out his dog. The poor thing needed 'to go' so bad he left a trail of urine on his way to the spot. A trail other companion dogs soon followed for the same order of business. He leads his mare, Rose, to a line some riders set up to tie the horses and care for them collectively. A vacant spot is right near a golden-coated horse, the one he saw ride in earlier. With a quick side eye both mares reach an understanding.

Lee has seen many fast horses in his years, but the golden horse sparked a curious fascination in him. It galloped so smoothly, yet powerfully. Tentatively, he pats its neck, admiring the pendants on the collar it carries. A gentle nudge on his lower back calls back his attention.

-"Rose?" he looks back at his mare, "Don't say you're jealous?"

Turning back to Rose to meet her demands, Lee notices Rodeo, his dog, is back…but not to him. A stranger is playing with the big goof.

-"It's that man." he thinks to himself, hesitating. He's not sure whether to reprimand the stranger for approaching his dog or to take it easy. This race has proven to him that some people are more than willing to hurt others and their animals to get ahead. He waits in silence, stroking the mare's coat, observing. He can't decide which of them is goofier, the dog or the guy. If Rodeo likes him, might as well give it a try. After all, they didn’t have a chance to exchange words as the stranger rode straight into one of the other tents and there was no time then.

There is time now.

Lee approaches them just as his dog is able to win the wrestling match and throws the man to the ground.

-"Hey! Sorry about that. My pupper forgets how big he has gotten." Lee reaches his hand out and the stranger accepts the offer.

-" I pulled on his tail so I kinda deserved that.", his accent is light, but noticeable. -"I'm Edward! Edward MacArthur."

Leslie lets out a chuckle.

-" I was about to question if you were maybe Irish, but with a surname like that I'm glad I didn't get to make a fool of myself." ,they shake hands, -"I'm Leslie Bishop. Pleasure!"

And two of a kind meet.

Someone Edward can tell bad jokes to and share stories with. Someone Leslie can trust in this dangerous race.
