Description
I drew this little robot on the back of a post card a while ago and thought he looked so cool that i had to do something with him. I cut him out and sat him on my desk. As I pursued various other projects, he watched over...waiting for his time to shine lol...this was about 3 months ago. This was finished in a bit of a rush (I was using it for an interview I had the next day to get into uni). I started without a concept, I just wanted the robot to be accompanied by more things that had been cut out. Once the squares came and I started playing around with their placement, the idea of what it would all say simply cultivated itself. It was about being imaginative and original - a tornado of ideas and imagination coming out of his head, in contrast to the plain, orderly squares he resided in or was expected to adhere to (as a robot of course).
Hope you like it

You do have a point...I tend to think a lot of good art (of every genre) gets lost here...which is a pity, because there are a lot of wonderful talented people on here who should be recognized...

oh thanks! Im glad to have temporarily converted you with the power of humour I only like robots when theyre done well and are imaginative, i think sometimes (especially in anime) theyve been overdone and are just unoriginal. But you get some great ones
Thanks very much for your comment!

Thanks! I feel like i should go back and a few more details and fine tune things, as i kind of left it at the end - originally intending to colour it, but that didnt eventuate. Thnaks for the fave

I see a touch of whimsy in some of your works, including this one. This is a fun piece to look at.
My only criticism would be that I think the squares might look better if they were textured cubes, done with lines in pen & ink. Good looking work, though.

Thankyou I like whimsical pieces myself so i guess i take that factor into account alot subconsciously as im looking for ideas
Yeah, some people have said that about the squares as well. Do you mean just like straight lines in different directions on each square? I guess that would unify the bottom of the picture with the top end, which i guess i was trying to avoid. But there must be something in it, as youre not the first to say it

bear69designs In reply to Simanion [2007-03-03 14:25:19 +0000 UTC]
After looking at it again I think simple crosshatching would be a good idea to try, and the squares could still be mostly blacked out, with just some slight fade to white near the tops. I think the reason it comes up is that there is such a solid blackness in the squares, and the rest of the work is much more open and lighter. Shading the squares would keep them dark and give you the contrast you want, but help them fit in more with the rest of the image. The ink density at the bottom of the thought bubble is probably what I would try to match near the top of each square.
That's a great looking piece and very charming, though... I don't want you to think I'm complaining Just running my mouth a bit

No not at all, run it away haha. Though because im "done" with this, i probably wont be changing anything. But its cool to hear what you/others would alternatively do with this. I guess (dont know if you read this) because i was originally planning to colour the top parts i was already lining up the density to match. Then that never eventuated lol. Thanks for your comments

THis is well worth waiting on the full view to load. It's mesmerizing and compositonally sound. Black and white can be hard to work with in a color-filled world, but you do it exceptionally.

Thankyou very much I really love working with black and white and just the fact that you said what you did fills me with confidence, as it isnt exactly attention grabbing from afar. I often look at my gallery and think it just looks overall bleak haha, and im thus working on something now that is maybe the most colourful thing ive done. But thanks very much, your words inspire me. Thanks for the fave too!
