Description
I drew this little robot on the back of a post card a while ago and thought he looked so cool that i had to do something with him. I cut him out and sat him on my desk. As I pursued various other projects, he watched over...waiting for his time to shine lol...this was about 3 months ago. This was finished in a bit of a rush (I was using it for an interview I had the next day to get into uni). I started without a concept, I just wanted the robot to be accompanied by more things that had been cut out. Once the squares came and I started playing around with their placement, the idea of what it would all say simply cultivated itself. It was about being imaginative and original - a tornado of ideas and imagination coming out of his head, in contrast to the plain, orderly squares he resided in or was expected to adhere to (as a robot of course).
Hope you like it

that must have been a really big postcard or a really really fine pen then, judging by the detail -- awesome job again

I did, yes That was about 4 years ago now. I remember in the interview I expressed regret about bringing this one in as I thought I'd rushed it, and my interviewer said he was glad I did and mentioned the white-space yada yada, so yeah the robot helped haha.

Ah white space ... I had a high school art teacher who went on and on about that. So it's still evident in lots of my work.

I used to operate on a theory of "absolutely no white space" haha. But yeah, it's very valuable. Essential in Graphic Design

Ah - so once you've done the Masters is it out into the big bad world to earn a crust?

Hehe I guess so hey... Scary thought. I highly doubt I'll get anything good design-wise right away. I'll probably work a dead-end job for a while and hopefully slowly build up my design career momentum in the meantime.
How about you? Where are you at in life?

I'm a teacher ... working for a charity called Life Education. We teach drug education to kids 5 -12. I'm hoping to wiggle my way into a bit more of a creative role within the organisation ... designing work books and readers for example. hasn't happened yet, been there just over 2 years. i'm still hopeful.

That sounds like a challenging and very rewarding job, good on you Yeah definitely make the push, the more creatively that stuff is presented, the more appealing and effective it'd be I think

That's a cool way of thinking about it. I distinctively like to do both, either full colour of completely black and white. So I try to force myself to sometimes go inbetween, limit the colour pallette without nothing at all, and I find it hard lol.

I can use colors, but I don't know why I tend to make just b/w sketches
