Aaaaand now we're up to 600 < 3

WHOLY SHIT GUYS OVER 1000 FAVS! THANK YOU!

I made this stamp because often I get told that animation is something solely meant for children.
I, personally, still see animated films in theaters more often than I see live action ones. Some people fail to see that it's just another way of telling a story, not a dumbed down version for children.
Animated movies can tackle very real issues as seriously as any medium. Furthermore, the conflicts can be taken very seriously. Films like The Secret of NIMH, Watership down, Grave of the fireflies, Felidae and more recently Pixar's Up are very serious movies, clearly not meant solely for children.

How to train your dragon was produced by Dreamworks animation. It is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Cressida Cowell

I hate the idea animation is for kid sonly.. especially the people whos ay it typically either are butthurt morons who know nothing, or praise animated moves as if it doesn't counts.

Animation is freaking art, it can be more then silly comedy and it can damn well be allowed to show more mature things with out having to make it okay for kids. As well as not allways have to have comedy... seriously most of the new cartoons have been comedies. I love humor, but what says animation only has to be silly?

Those people who say we're too old to watch cartoons are absolute hypocrites. They think it's wrong for grown ups to watch kids shows, yet they're alright with little kids watching adult shows and reality shows.

Not to mention that there are shows like Family Guy, the Simpsons, Futurama, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, South Park, and so on, which are animated, but most definitely NOT for children.

SaraHouck In reply to MedusaArt [2014-01-16 19:30:01 +0000 UTC]

Now that you mention it, I think the reputation of animation being considered a children's medium initially came into full swing sometime in the late 60s or so, pretty much for many reasons. For one, the crumbling of the studio system discontinued cartoon shorts being bundled with main features in theaters, along with the increasing prevalence in television sets in households. Secondly, full-quality animation was considered labour intensive, which could be a legitimate reason why many television cartoons made then had limited animation. Eventually, many ratings from those cartoons came from children. As a result, children were typically expected not to care about animation quality issues, so as a result, producers of animated shows began writing down to their presumed audience and continued to do so over the next couple of decades, and this concept somehow might've been exaggerated in the 80s with those so-called half-hour toy commercials. The problem somehow didn't end until the Disney Renaissance kicked in, but even then, films from that era were considered family films, meaning they were kid-appropriate, so despite all the edgy cartoons that were cranked out, including the ones you mentioned as examples, it's been pretty difficult to get rid of a concept that many people have been stuck with for the past fifty years or so because it's been so deeply ingrained into their minds to the point where it may be difficult for them to be convinced otherwise.

I'm sure many generations of young'uns enjoying those shorts were pretty unaware of that.

I personally LOVE seeing animated movies, even though I "should" be past the past the age for watching those sorts of movies, as the unwritten rule of the world states. But no, you're completely correct in stating that animation is not just for little kids. While the plot and content may be dumbed down a bit because of younger viewers, this does not mean that it should be immediately deemed as "for kids only". I've seen A LOT of adults enjoy many animated movies such as HTTYD, Up, Finding Nemo, and many others (this is also true for certain T.V shows. I have a paster and his kids who absolutely adore the Avatar: The Last Airbender series ) I like animated films more than live actions ones because my artist side tends to kick in and I find myself trying to figure out how the animators got this to look like that, and so on and so forth. Besides, I tend to find that most live action films nowadays (except ones based on true stories) tend to be pretty darn stupid...but that's just me and my opinion (But seriously, The Hangover? Bad Teacher? I don't find vulgar and suggestive films entertaining or funny in the least ) Β

It's very sad when today's media forgets that when Snow White premiered in 1937, "All of Hollywood's stars turns up for a cartoon."Β  And not to many stars in Hollywood were children at the time.

Princess Mononoke One of THE MOST serious animated movies I have ever seen. and one of the most violent, as in limbs and heads flying off violent.

Weird thing is...I'm always eating dinner whenever I watch those parts...and my biggest reaction is a wince or blurtung out "oooh!"
