They should've tried this in TMP to break his kolinahr, thus getting rid of the boring guy Spock turned into, and getting normal good Spock back much sooner.

He used to. In fact, a few bloopers I've seen from TOS have him sticking a cigarette into his mouth.

i've grown up in a house of smokers......
the smoke used to make it hard for me to breathe and would burn my eyes and throat.....but you get used to it after 17 years of life....
i still hate it though.

James Doohan also smoked, but he quit when he was in his 70's I think? He had a heart attack and it scared the mess out of him so he just stopped cold after smoking since he was a young adult. lol
