I love the contrast of the blues and yellow-oranges. Lovely.

This is a stunning shot. Have the colors been modified or is this how it was photographed?

It looks so peaceful, with the water so calm. I read all the other comments about what time of year the shot was taken, but it reminds me of summer...of sitting at the edge of a glass-still rockpool and dipping my toes in.

Simon-P In reply to EveryNextDream [2007-10-26 23:57:49 +0000 UTC]

You can trust me when I say it was pretty COLD but worth the suffering, I lost out to second place with this in a comp to a pretty average landscape, which was a bit of a bitter pil to swallow ha ha, it also beat one of my own nudes by a long chalk which was pretty funny
This place looks so unremarkable in daylight and impressive at night, thanks for your comment, believe me though you really don't want to dip your toes in that water

Hi simon, you've got me beat with this one. It looks like it was taken in a November evening when it would be dark. Moonlit night? warmed up in PP.
Im puzzled and interested

Simon-P In reply to Stuartf [2007-10-25 18:16:05 +0000 UTC]

Nothing that complex, yes it was November 5th 2006 (while others were shooting fireworks I chose this as the shot of choice) fading light no moon, a little light in sky after sunset, bridge is floodlit, no PS enhancement, just a slight curves adjustment.

Thanks for the comment, glad you like it.

Stuartf In reply to Simon-P [2007-10-25 19:27:56 +0000 UTC]

I did wonder about it being flood lit but because it looked like a ruin in the middle of nowhere I didnt think it could be . Noticed the time said 6.30 on the info, it's pitch black up here at that time of year . Great shot all the more though, for not needing enhancement.

It was approx 5:30,(17:30) camera would have been on BST and the 5th November is GMT its set to whatever time it would have been at purchase, can be pretty confusing though when visiting my mother in California GMT -8
Not sure where you are but this is about 35 miles north of Pitlochery

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stuartf In reply to Simon-P [2007-10-25 21:19:33 +0000 UTC]

Yep, my camera is the same, I set it when I got it then forgot to change it with the time changes so all this summers have been out by an hour and on holiday in France by 2, gets confusing at times .
I am actually in the North East about half an hour from Aberdeen, but I work up in the Speyside area and am quite often across to the A9. I am assuming this was taken somewhere beside the A9 north of Pitlochry?, Dalwhinnie area perhaps or a bit north of that
Lots of nice places that side unlike my area which is pretty agricultural/industrial

Simon-P In reply to Stuartf [2007-10-25 21:41:02 +0000 UTC]

Actually looking at the map, maybe more like 60 miles! Oops (Carrbridge) didn't seem that far!
Aberdeenshire reminds me a bit of the patchwork fields of the south, sure the locals wont be too pleased to hear me say that
Quite like the area myself, Banf coast etc

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stuartf In reply to Simon-P [2007-10-25 22:19:23 +0000 UTC]

Your right about Aberdeenshire, if you towards Peterhead and Fraserburgh from where we are it is pretty flat and featureless, even the trees dont grow
From where we are at the bottom of the only decent sized hill in the area (Bennachie) it gets more interesting as you head west. I do think you need to hit the Spey before the landscapes get better though. Moray coast is also quite nice but I dont spend a lot of time up there.

Simon-P In reply to Stuartf [2007-10-25 23:12:19 +0000 UTC]

I have not explored the area extensively, Moray coast is very nice and a pretty neat lighthouse at Boddam, Bow fiddle rock very interesting too.
Maybe I will get back up there at some point.
Looking like Pitlochery area next weekend, maybe have a go at some lightpainted landscapes with the recently acquired 2,000,000 candle power torch
Mind you there a bit hit and miss with a bit of luck needed.

Stuartf In reply to Simon-P [2007-10-26 14:46:45 +0000 UTC]

Your right I have heard that there are reliability problems with that torch you mentioned, in fact we had one here all week but seem to have lost it today

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simon-P In reply to Stuartf [2007-10-26 14:59:27 +0000 UTC]

I think the torch is pretty reliable, due to its high power though it only lasts for about 20-30 minuets on a full charge, not really an issue for a light paint, the big problem is remembering what you have painted so as not to go over the same bit twice and messing up the exposure.
As these ideas randomly float through my head, I was wondering, that with Scotland being what it is weather wise if it was heavily overcast if you could paint in some cloud detail if it is low enough, only one way to find out I guess. Never light painted anything bigger than a model before, should be fun!

Stuartf In reply to Simon-P [2007-10-26 15:18:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes but if you are working with a very wide angle lens you will have to do a lot of walking to get to all the bits you need . Seriously though I think I got the wrong end of the stick there , had to go check out torch websites and sure enough you do get such a thing - have fun with it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simon-P In reply to Stuartf [2007-10-26 18:58:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes a lot of walking around and treading in cow pats etc no doubt! I have seen 10,000,000 candle power torches, but they are pretty bulky and heavy, even this one has some serious beam on it, more than a car headlights maybe 2/3x as powerful, should be fun! worst case scenario I will get some exercise ha ha.
