I didn't actually know it was known by that name, I know it as Buachaille Etive Mor, commonly refereed to as The Buachaille.
Thanks for your comment.

Not trying to be a smart ass here...
The group of hills in that area is called Buchaille Etiv Mor and this particular, prominent one is Stob Dearg, although we all (including myself) call it BEM. No worries mate!

My understanding is this, The Buchaille Etiv Mor (The Great Herdsman of glen Etive) guarding the entrance to Glencoe is the larger of the two, the smaller being The Buchaille Etiv Beag, not really viable here, (wee Buchaille or small Headsman) Stob Dearg, apparently is the classical peak, so maybe one and the same, depending on who you talk to or what you read, I just get my info from the Baggers and I'm in no position to dispute them
One thing for sure is, that most of the hills in that area, are as hard to pronounce as they are to climb.

Thank you, it was late September, so actually quite warm, well for here, in winter its pretty much a no go area for most.

Thank you.
Never seen any fish this far upstream, but I'm sure there must be a few little ones.

this is beautiful simon!
i aint normally a great fan of HDR, but this uses it so well to not only create a vibrant shot but gives it that hyper-real unsettling feeling that works so well here.
for me it brings everything 'closer together'
i feel depth perception gets slightly lost .. which in turn brings the foreground rock and the background mountain together which just adds to the mood.
of course i could just be rambling

Thanks David, appreciated.
I'm not a big HDR fan either, nice tool to have in the box sometimes (especially if you forget your grad filters, oops!), often I think it just looks way OTT and not very real.
However, I quite like how this one turned out.
I understand what you are saying about the depth perception, the rock and mountain must be 2 miles or more apart yet seem so close.

Thank you.
The Bauchaille, must be one of the most photographed places in the world, its hard sometimes to find a place that makes it a bit different, it was worth the wet feet I think!

Probably? come on lol .... definitely worth the wet feet - beautifully shot and wonderful moody sky - HDR?

Thanks.
Yes it is an HDR, actually there is not a great deal of difference between the base exposure +/- 0 and the HDR apart from the HDR "look" in the sky and bumped saturation.
All a matter of taste too, it's popular, not always my thing, but quite like this one.

I think the sky really works with the HDR though, beautifully actually.
Definitely a matter of taste, mine as it happens

I think you will find that (dare I say it) that the purists will be more likely not to like it and that most others and the general public will like it, because of its striking colours and different looking cloud detail.
This is where I kind of swing, I am all for pure photography, most of my photography probably shouts that out loud, but I have no objection to modern methods like HRD etc either, it all has its place, you use the tools available to you, nothing wrong with that as far as I am concerned.
I think though some HDR is way over cooked, and that is what possibly makes it so artificial at times.
This scene aside from the clouds, didn’t look much different, camera dynamic range Vs eye dynamic range are worlds apart!

JanMurphyPhoto In reply to Simon-P [2008-09-30 16:09:54 +0000 UTC]
Dare you say it indeed - so I'm not a purist but then again is there such a catgory and can you categorise a whole section of others to think ONE way? I hope not Simon.
HDR definitely has it's place, along with hand tinting (as long as done well of course)....
The scene shows that it didn't have alot of work done to it, beautiful shot and thank you for sharing more indepth of what goes behind the work.

There are people that do think just ONE way, its there prerogative, each to their own I guess.
Me, I will chose whatever method I think works best for any given situation, in the end, the end product is what really matters.
I am always happy to share, its been a pleasure, hell this has got more attention than some of my nudes, there must be non nude viewers out there after all

JanMurphyPhoto In reply to Simon-P [2008-10-01 10:36:14 +0000 UTC]
I guess so - one way, if that is their way I guess that is fine.
The end product is what is important and what it does/says to you as an artist. Absolutely agree with what you say there.
Glad your happy to share xx tis a pleasure learning from you.
I adore figure, but at times it's nice to have a selection also.
