To celebrate my friend ~kaibyaku 's birthday, this double layered marble cake was designed in secret with the help of his girlfriend and my husband. The fondant was very cooperative with me because I found the concentrated icing dye to color it for the power and 1up mushrooms, goomba, green pipes and hills, yellow coins, and white cloud.You can see the side of the cake in the top left corner, and the top of the cake in the bottom right corner. I got the idea from this album . Classic Super Mario Brothers games bring back so many memories. Retro gamers, unite!

did you make your own fondant or did you buy it? i made my own out of marshmallows and confectionary sugar... it was the messiest thing ive ever done.

Hehe, I've made my own fondant from scratch. I found some recipes online and decided to give them a try. The first cake I made ( [link] ) didn't have marshmallows-- it made it so hard to work with the dough! With my next cake however, ( [link] ), all went well with the marshmallow fondant, and that's what I work with now.
