Description This is something kind of silly but I had fun with it anyway.

I’ve been thinking a lot about those fankids I did back at the end of December , and wanted to flesh out the rest of the neo-Freedom Fighter roster. This week in between classes I’ve been jotting down ideas, so today I finally played with some colors and details for a few of them while listening to my homework lecture online. They all could use a lot of work, and this isn’t even close to all the characters I’ve made, but I still like how the roster is turning out. I’m calling it 25 years later, but I haven’t really worked out all the numbers yet. That’s roughly where it’s at.

From left to right:

Amy x ??

The little pink prince of Mercia, who I’ve been calling Chariot Rose, or Cheerios for short. 25 years ago the rightful heir to the Mercian throne and his family went into hiding and never returned. After the fall of the Eggman Empire, a search party tried one last time to locate them, but it proved fruitless. The next closest relative was chosen to inherit the kingdom- Amy Rose. Now that’s a fun and long story in itself, but for Cheerios that’s not the important part. All that matters is his mom is Queen and he’s the next in line to be King.

Cheerios is A LOT like his mom. A romantic to the core. He’s a little lady killer- he falls desperately in love with almost every girl he meets, big or small, rich or poor. He’s especially keen on Sonic’s two girls, but so far they’ve both turned him down repeatedly. He never seems too heartbroken about it though, instead insisting that a grander gesture of his love is needed for one of them to make up their minds. He likes to flirt, but he’s not a player. He only wants one girlfriend at a time, but so far no one’s said yes, so he keeps trying. Think of him as a small, pink Tamaki-sempai from Ouran. He’s also sometimes so forward that he comes off as cheeky- he openly refers to Sonic as ‘father’, since he’s already convinced that Sonic will be his father-in-law. Sonic’s not happy about it.

But also like his mother, he’s got boundless optimism and a big heart, and a looooooooooooot of enthusiasm. He’s got a very go-getter attitude and can be hard to keep up with. There isn’t an ounce of malice in him, and he’s the most generous and forgiving member of the team. He’s very opposite to WereSally (the blue SonSal kid from the last batch). Both kids are set to inherit their respective thrones, but where WereSal takes that for granted and simply bosses people around, Cheerios is determined to be a good king to his people when he grows up, treats his younger brothers respectfully, and has the bravery and determination to match his words.

He's a total dandy and loves to look nice and buy fancy clothes. He wields a giant golden hammer that packs a vicious punch. He's a major bruiser in the group, despite what his small size may suggest.

Cheerios doesn’t really have a lot to learn in the way of needing an attitude adjustment or finding his purpose. He’s going to be a good king.

However, just because the rightful heir was never found, doesn’t mean he died…

Vector x ??

I never minded Argyle so I didn’t mind keeping him. I wanted to include at least one Chaotix kid, and I liked the body diversity a crocodile offered to the group. May change the name, but Argyle Crocodile is already a pretty nice name.

For Argyle, I just slimmed him down to something closer to Vector’s classic look, and keep him sleek and smooth to match his personality. He’s really into music thanks to growing up around his dad’s music collection. He plays the piano and is a budding DJ trying to make a name for himself. He’s kind of a hipster- really obsessed with records and vintage music, and he’ll argue that he was born in the wrong decade just because he doesn’t like today’s pop music.

He’s closest to Lara-Su, they grew up around each other a lot and they might as well be a couple already. They’re both too cool and aloof to make things official. They were both frequently saddled with babysitting the other families’ kids since they were the oldest, particularly Espio’s and Charmy’s. Argyle doesn’t really like Lara-Su’s dad a whole lot (not that he’d say anything to him about it), since he’s kind of intense and scary. (Though he’s even more scared of her mom, who seems to have some sort of grudge against his family…) Lara-Su doesn’t really like Argyle’s dad because he’s kind of weird and loud.

He’s the team’s resident tech guy (though his specialty was using it for music productions and not saving the world), and they convinced him to join for specifically that reason. He’d much rather be at home with his music collection than hanging out with a bunch of spoiled royal tweens, but once Lara joined and they said they needed him, he begrudgingly went along with it. He’s lazy and sarcastic, but like his dad, he’s charitable and can’t bring himself to let other people suffer. He’ll still moan about having to help though.

Knuckles x Julie-Su

The only other character I kept mostly the same as before was Lara-Su. The naming convention was already in place (female echidnas take their mother’s suffix in their name -su, -le, -da, etc.), and it wasn’t like I was going to change the ONE FEMALE GUARDIAN (who doesn’t die of the flu or whatever) to a son, so it’s still essentially Lara-Su. And I can’t picture her with siblings- Knuckles has little experience with siblings after growing up isolated and Julie-Su hated hers, so one kid was plenty.

I haven’t really nailed down a good look for her yet. I want her to be taller and buffer than the others, so I tried mixing in some Boom-Knuckles to her design, along with the SA2 sunglasses. But neh, the design’s going to need some major reworking, I’ll admit. XD

Lara still has some slight chaos powers, but it goes no further than her father’s connection to the Master Emerald went. No Chaos Control, no whatever. Primarily, she fights with her long spiked knuckles- she’s a brawler and likes to get her hands dirty.

From a very early age, her father would take her out on survival trips, which were basically getting plopped into the jungle with no supplies and finding ways to live off of the land for weeks at a time. Unlike Locke, Knuckles accompanied these trips and never faked his own death. Lara thinks her parents can be a little overbearing and nutty at times, but after hearing what her grandparents were like, she sorta understands and tries not to hold it against them.

She’s not too terribly concerned about becoming the next guardian. Mostly because life has been relatively peaceful during her upbringing and he doesn’t have a concept of what she’ll have to deal with. But she does think it’s lame that there’s only been one female guardian before her who was basically a footnote and she wants to absolutely rock at her job.

She hates Sonic’s kids, except Chux, since she forgets he exists. She REALLY doesn’t get along with WereSal, who she thinks is a total flake. But when the team is forced to join together for the first time, she goes along to help out. She’s not good at working with others. She was trained to be independent, not work in a team. It’s going to take some time for her to warm up to the others.

Tails x Mina

This was always such a bizarre pairing, but okay, let’s roll with it. A lot can change in 25 years and there’s not THAT big of an age gap between the two of them. Whatever the circumstances in how they met, they’ve had one kid so far: Melody. (Good enough name until I come up with a replacement.)

This Melody is not like the old Melody. To begin with, she’s a fox, and she’s an only child. She DOES have her mother’s super speed, and she’s been working to control it better than her mom could. However, she’s not training in order to be heroic- she wants to use her abilities to further her acting career.

Melody’s whole thing is being the star child of the super famous Mina Mongoose, who shattered music charts and continues to be the Queen of Pop. She’s been in the limelight since she was just a toddler, instantly winning audiences’ hearts by playing plucky, adorable characters in movies and TV shows. Now that she’s a little older, she’s trying to build her fame- she’s begun releasing singles as a pop star herself (they’re terrible but they sell well), and she’s regularly signed on for starring roles in major films. She lives to as big a personality as possible. Her goal is to be in every person’s DVR, iPod, computer, and magazine. She’s not sure what more there is to life- her mother lived in the spotlight, and her father is a prolific inventor. Obviously, attention is good.

She’s selfish and spoiled. While talented in many areas, she has no understanding about how regular people live. She’s never been worried about money or living uncomfortably. She gets annoyed when Argyle asks her for a bump in his DJ career. She’s a hard worker, but even she’s not really sure what she’s working towards, or why. She just wants to make more stuff. Where her dad wanted to create things to help people and her mom wanted to sing people’s troubles away, Melody has none of these goals. If you took the fame away from her, it’s hard to say what person you’d be left with.

Sonic’s other girl, the tiny orange one, reallllly doesn’t get along with her, mostly out of jealousy that Melody has superspeed and can use it well, and Orange doesn’t. It doesn’t help that Melody gloats about it endlessly.

When she is called upon to help save the world, she does so without hesitation- being a hero will be great PR, and can only make her more famous. This shallow reason isn’t going to carry her all the way though, once the going gets tough. She’s going to have to discover what kind of person she really is, and if she’s got the mettle to become the hero she plays on TV.

So those are four more of the Neo-Freedom Fighters I’ve been thinking of. So far we have WereSal, Orange, Chux, Melody, Lara-Su, Cheerios, and Argyle. There’s still two more on the team I need to draw out, one fankid and one new guy altogether. Then there’s all the other characters, good and evil, who aren’t on the team but exist in this little world I’ve been thinking of. I’ll get to them sometime soon. They’re a lot of fun. They don’t get along at all at first, but their story is one of learning to be friends with each other and find their way.

I like how you designed Argyle.
He wanted to stay at home? They have safe places to dwell too? I've never read the comics.

I do enjoy Argyle; in my major AU (made of bits and pieces of everything in the Sonic franchise), his mom is Vanilla and he has a little sister named Beat who is a Bunnydile; hybrids in my head canon are possible but varying degrees of rare depending on the degree with feature hybrids (Honey the winged cat) being the most common type of hybrid and true hybrids (have enough features of both species to be given another name) being the rarest. Cream adores her half-siblings by the way.

I tend not to be a big fan of hybrid characters, just because it's a lot harder to streamline their look into something cohesive when it has parts from two different species. Little Jon is about as crazy as I get, haha! I just imagine it getting super confusing and complicated once you get to the next generation after that, when you've got like, part echidna, part rabbit, part bee, and part walrus characters or something. So I go the "one species or the other" route to keep things tidy.

But I'd never really thought about Honey as a hybrid character, so that's a good point! I always assumed the wings were just a part of her outfit, but it'd be an interesting take if they were real and something she inherited from a parent.

A friend of mine who's been drawing a while tends to take features that are dramatically different and streamline them; like Evangeline, her muzzle is just too long to be rabbit but just too short to be coyote. She may or may not have an extra fluffy coyote tail. We also do things like (for our anti-Charmy/anti-Cream kids) take a rabbit and give them bee wings and antennae (my partner insisted on bunny-bee children). Beat is still in development but she's probably going to be reptilian with some rabbit features. We also keep it simple with hybrids never being more than 2 species at a time (for example, we have a couple of Julayla, Sonsal daughter and Comet, Shadow/Cream son; their gene pool could result in pure hedgehog, pure chipmunk/whatever Sally is, pure rabbit, hedgehog/chipmunk, hedgehog/rabbit or rabbit/chipmunk but no rabbit/hedgehog/chipmunk); now outside of Sonic verse, hybrids can get pretty weird (just browse the folder here (universescollideinc.deviantart… ) for some examples) but they tend more towards one species than another (like a lion/rabbit/dove hybrid who mostly resembles a rabbit but has dove wings and rabbit markings on the rear legs/legs in anthro form). To each their own; viva la difference!
Thanks for the compliment. We actually have a plot where Sonic and Tails go to a secret village that looks just perfect...until they throw Tails into the nearby canyon with his tails bound for being a mutant freak. It turns out that there's a village of others who had been thrown into the canyon being protected by unicorns. Among the citizens are several hybrids, some foreigners (including a dolphin who got there while drunk; no idea how he got there) and some adults who protested the disposal of others (including a badger who's the matron for the orphanage; if you know anything about the Redwall books, she's a total badger mom). Tails ends up leading them to fight against the village just as Sonic, who's understandable furious, leads back forces from Acorn.

I think his little brothers mostly stay at the castle with mom. Cheerios is the one that goes out into the field and fights alongside the freedom fighters from time to time when they need him.

If a threat ever got right up to the throne room, you can bet the rest of the family would come up to defend it. But so far (at least in this picture) Cheerios has stopped John from getting that close!

Right now I'm just drawing out the main group of future characters. But another time I might come back and draw the rest of the characters I've been thinking of, including the brothers and what the canon present-day people would look like 25 years later.

YESSS MORE OF THESE LITTLE SCAMPS ! Cheerios is adorable, he makes me think of Kirby, visually. Personality-wise he makes me think of Roger from...Sister Sister, I think? He was this kid who hit on both of the sisters, all the time, he'd talk about them like they were his girlfriends (usually just one at a time) and talk to their parents like they were his...heh.

Loving Argyle's design!! I feel like the world is always in need of more gator/croc characters, especially when it comes to Sonic ones. Really any kind of reptile for Sonic characters. More, I say. MORE!!
...AHEM ANYWAYS his whole look really works in so many ways~! Great choice making him look like Vector used to, though of course with his own differences. >u< The clothes look really cool, even though there's just the shoes and gloves and hat it just really looks neat to me !!

Lara really intrigues me, her head..really reminds me of something, or someone (not Knuckles or Julie-Su of course), but I honestly can't think of it. Strange. And that's also probably a strange thing to say, ahaha. I love those sunglasses from SA2, so it's nice to see those again! And her hands....gloves? are really nice, maybe that's another weird thing to say pfft but I really dig how pointy and long they are compared to her father's.

Melody is just about the most adorable thing on the planet tbh. Which also means I don't feel like I could trust her at all xD
but really, I think her design is very fitting too! Her clothing makes me think of idols (or maybe just Vocaloid or somethin idk haha), and she's just. Ughhhh. Too precious. I want to play with her hair-tails. She sounds like some kind of Disney Channel star, except maybe not quite as corrupted and broken as your average Disney Channel star.

i love these characters of yours and i CANNOT WAIT to see more !!!! :') keep it up friendo!!
also, kind of a random thought just now but I can totally see Orange having a voice like Kristen Schaal , just had to throw that out there as soon as the idea popped into my mind!

Haha, I looked up Roger on youtube and yeah he's a lot like that. XD

Ahhhh A+ voice pick for Orange. I think that's how I'm going to picture her sounding from now on!

More pictures of your kids? This isn't Facebook. XP

They all pretty much work; I really like Argyle's new look, and I took an instant disliking to Cheerio (which, for the character, works). Lara-Su's got the sort of attitude look going that seems to be an element of both her mother and her aunt. Your future-aesthetic here for clothing seems like a blend of Japanese and Apple design sensibilities, without hitting the trite notes that so many modernist designs seem to take as the formula. (I swear, if I see one more new logo that's just like every other new logo, I might act out the first two words of this sentence. Bad joke, but joke.)

Yaaaay, you made more! I really love looking at your designs and reading through the descriptions. This definitely sounds like a future Sonic world I could be a lot more interested in, since the characters you're creating for it feel more relatable than "So-and-So Junior" did. I really want to see more of these kids and their world and see how they learn to get along with each other, especially WereSal and Melody, since it sounds like they have a lot of bridges to cross.

Also I'm so, so, SO curious about how Rob O' Hedge's child might play into this, if they do~
