Oh no, that's fine. It's easy to forget about these things. I didn't think about the conversation going this way till the end. Hiding the previous comment will do the job.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Eric! Hope you have a great time and I'll speak to you on the other side. Have fun!

Leigh

I saw it.. it is pretty decent.. more of an analysis of how boys deal with conflict.. each "wild thing" is either a piece of his own psyche or represents a person or emotion in his own life.. he tries to become "the mommy" and fix all the wild things problems.. looking at himself from the outside and seeing how self destructive he is.. the way a parent would see it.. only his solutions are child solutions to problems..
I am not giving away anything by saying this but.. in the end he decides that his mom isn't doing such a bad job of managing things (he fails at the task) and that family life isn't as easy as he thought and he leaves with a new understanding (and appreciation) of his life.. family.. and his place in it..
As I said earlier.. people went to the movies expecting something cutesy and Disney-ish.. haha.. they should have known better.. directed by the guy who created β€œBeing John Malkovich”..
I hope this represents a new trend in America where we don’t β€œdumb down” movies for children.. children are far more intelligent then parents give them credit for..
Cheers!

You know what ... that does sound pretty good, actually! That's such a great way of representing the issues of a child too.

I love films that deal with darker (more real) subjects that also contrast it with a fantasy landscape (like Pan's Labyrinth .. not saying that's a kid's film though). In some ways, that's how children deal with things ... for people to expect something sugar coated is just unreasonable and unrealistic. It certainly won't prepare them for life if they are sheltered and brought up on Disney alone. They're going to be in total shock when life hits them, hehe. I totally agree with you on the point of giving more credit to children too.

This is the kind of thing that fuels the censorship squad into destroying perfectly good films.

Oh yes! "Being John Malkovich" is so good!! It's just out there in terms of plot ... but at the same time it makes so much sense.

It came out two days ago so not yet. It's getting good reviews though.

You thought enough of it to recommend it, so yes.

I saw "Law Abiding Citizen" last night and it was good. It starts really quickly, but there's a couple of twists and I physically jumped at one part ... that was a WTF moment, let me tell ya that! I really enjoyed it.

I thought I would report back, hehe. I'll see "Where The Wild Things Are" to balance it out now.

Wow, trying to find this comment again to update was a mission. I didn't realise that all the comments on this deviation were mine either.

Okay, I didn't make it to the film. The timing just did not work out. It's going on my list though and as soon as I see it, I'll let you know and we can have another chat. I did see Avatar 3D last week (having mentally removed all the expectations everyone has built up) and it was pretty good ... okay English understatement ... it was brilliant. I really don't understand all the over-hyped views of it though, but maybe I'm desensitised now, who knows. Have you seen it yet? I would recommend seeing the 3D version if you haven't. Oh, and go in with a free mind.

I saw it when it came out in the states.. I didn't think the lack of story line was an issue since it was an experiment in subverting our natural senses.. i think decades from now our grandchildren will be wondering what the big deal was.. since the technology will be ancient by then and the shock value will be completely lost.. I can honestly say that I don't know if it was better than "Titanic" because I have never seen it..

lunarsparks In reply to simple-squamous [2010-02-28 02:56:32 +0000 UTC]

You know so many people have mentioned the lack of storyline and it really is true. That's not the thing that pulled me in but instead the whole look of it and the fact that it was the first 3D film I've seen (that wasn't those green and red glasses from the eighties, hehe). You know the first few moments where they space capsule was turning ... I actually felt a bit sick and it didn't help that I was sitting in the front row and it was the only thing I could see. I got used to it ... I know someone who felt ill all the way through. Funny really! In decades from now, they will probably have invented something that makes you literally part of the film or something. With the technology of games advancing ... they have to merge at some point.

"Titanic" ... what can I say ... I only liked it when I first saw it. It kind of goes downhill on subsequent watches. Don't go out of your way to watch it but see it once and that's it. If nothing else, you get a feel for the history behind it and watch out for the sub-plots since they are more interesting in my opinion. It's the whole event that I find incredible sad. Can't say whether "Avatar" is better than "Titanic". I can say that I enjoyed "Terminator" more the first time I saw that, hehe ... oh and I don't care what anyone says "Alien" is better than James Cameron's "Alien 2" ...

hehe.. you should never set in the front row.. I am surprised you recovered..

hmm I haven't watched Alien critically.. perhaps it is

I had no choice ... it was the only seat left. It was so packed and originally I found a seat further back, but ended up sitting on someone's coat who had saved the seat. Then in the dim light I saw this lone seat at the front ... it was all working against me.

It's not that I don't like the second one. I just think that the first Alien film has more mystery and suspense. There's a creepy calm to the whole silence of the ship before hell breaks loose. Oh, and I had to look at it critically for school, hehe, ... probably didn't help my view.

I'm trying to figure out a way of saying that I missed it without feeling a bit bad that I did, but I can't. The film was taken out of cinemas a whole lot quicker than I expected. I don't think it has been doing well and it isn't in any of my locals. I still may have a chance to see it in Leicester Square though (not the Odeon but another) on Monday ... it depends on the time because I'm seeing a ballet that day (free ticket going). I'm gonna try and work it though. Fingers crossed!

did "Where the Wild Things are" open in Europe yet?.. will you go see it?.. I am going this Friday.. was the book available to you as a child?.. it's kind of an American standard.. a lot of reviews are negative because people expected the nostalgia of their childhood to come rushing back.. instead they got something dark and aimless.. like the mind of a real troubled boy.. It may be an advantage to have never read it..

cheers

Aww, poor guy. Hehe. It's so weird, I went to London Zoo last Thursday to get some reference shots and I saw these guys. They really stuck in my mind too. I love the little gold flecks on them. I actually have a shot where it looks like one of them has put some reeds in it's mouth as a joke. It just shows you the kind of pics I get.

I adore the red glow on the underbelly in this and how it's contrasted against the green in the background. It's a great photo. That one in the background looks suspect ... it's waiting for something, hehe.

I love the zoo.. haha yeah they have "sparkles".. what kind of pics do you get?.. thank you.. hehe.. they were all kind of just floating there.. still as can be.. like they were waiting to pounce on the first thing to fall into the tank.. or maybe on the equivalent of fish Prozac..

lunarsparks In reply to simple-squamous [2009-10-27 22:58:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh fish prozac absolutely!

Yeah, they are probably the show-boaters of the piranha world! They are much more unusual than you'd expect ... as they say, you catch more with honey than vinegar. May be that's their ploy in getting prey ... "Ooo look at my shiny pointless sparkles ... " ... Yum! Lol!

The kind of pics I get! Well, it was a figure of speech which I forget doesn't come through in text, duh! I will show you the one I meant though for funsies: [link] ... I think it was taunting me, hehe. And this little guy, I call "Kissy Fish": [link] (mainly because I can't remember it's real name). I plan on doing some drawings from them (I need to get back to traditional work). I have some great ones of a pairie dog with it's mouth stuffed with nesting. It's adorable. I may post a couple later ... I don't know ..

websites like these can be particularly risky for our ego.. since we are being judged by fellow artists.. some of whom we respect and or admire

Hehe ... you can say that again. You do have to lay yourself out on the line and try not to take things to heart because the intention is usually to help. As artists we have to take the good with the bad. Sometimes, it can be hard to avoid being a sensitive soul with a crushable ego though.
