No, not yet. It opens on 11th December here. i may go and see it. I've seen the trailer and it looks really good. I do remember the book .. I actually remember the illustrations rather than having read it. As you said though, maybe it will help not going in with expectations.
With the nostaglia word, it made sense to me ... I just thought you meant that they expected their childhood memories to flood back. Public schools here are 'osh' schools (meaning tuition fees) ... is it something different there?

It's cool .. I made up the rest of the address from what I could make out of the link. It was "Arcade Fire - Wake up", right?
It's great when you discover obscure new music because of a film. I checked out some of their other tracks on Spotify ... which (having just looked) I don't think you can get in the US. 'Neon Bible' sounds like a great album though. I'm starting to get a really good idea of your tastes.

Have you heard of Tom McRae (he's an English singer)? I don't know if it's your thing but he has some really good pretty/sad/moody music! I especially like the songs "Line Of Fire", "It Ain't You", "You Cut Her Hair" (the sound of this one makes it a particular fave), "Bloodless" and "My Vampire Heart" ... to name a few.

yes in this instance nostalgia=memories.. which is not exactly correct
anyway that still amazes me that you have to wait so long.. it's a little like the Japanese releasing their techno gadgets and vehicles years later in the USA and the EU.. hehe.. anyway..
yes there were only 9 sentences in the original book.. and about 50 (or so?) pages of illustrations.. it was intended for children that just recently learned to read..
no public schools here are just the opposite.. they are funded entirely by tax dollars.. federal, state, and local.. so therefore, if you live in an area where few people pay tax or the local funding to the school is poor then your education suffers (on a sliding scale it seems).. in the states it's the private schools that are "posh" and require tuition fees (and pay their teachers a proper salary.. and provide a safe place to work).. you will find that most rich people send their children to private school.. (because they still teach properly)..
it has always amazed me that we blame our lack of education on funding.. when all it takes for proper education is a chalk board.. some chalk.. at least one book.. paper.. and several pencils.. preferably with erasers (though not necessary).. oh and a teacher that actually cares about education.. (that may be the hardest bit.. as teachers are the lowest paid profession in the USA.. right next to law enforcement)..
When I have children I will do my best to send them to either a well funded public school or a private one.. unfortunately tuition for private high schools rival that of major Universities..

I suppose if you look at the true meaning, it would not be the right word to choose but I can let you get away with that. It's what friends do, right, hehe.
Yeah, it amazes me too. They can give all the reasons they want such as passing it through certificate laws blah blah, but I still don't see a reason for it. The Japanese have the upper hand on both of us. I remember there was a big problem when the Nintendo Wii came out and it was released first in Japan, then America and then months later, Europe. It does seem like we're last in line here in the EU when getting our hands on new things. That's just the way it goes ....
Hehe, that's why I remember the illustrations! I did always love looking at pictures though.
See, I could never understand why tuition paid schools were called "public" schools here ... I always thought it should be the other way round. It is really weird that just the simple tools such as a good teacher and a chalk board does not equal a good school. It could be that not many teachers actually chose their careers and so don't care. I'm not qualified to talk about American schools, of course, but everyone always complains about funding here too. I went to what you would consider a "public" school as well .. well, actually two .. a 100 year old girl's school and then a mixed gender school ... both had their issues. They would probably seem less poor to you since we all wear uniforms here and there are a lot of rules plus the English accent makes us sound posh, hehehe. I don't know, I'm slightly generalising. I hated the second one though ... it felt like they didn't care and neither did the children. I think all schools should be more orientated to helping children find out what they want to do. It's just a shame that money is the only way to kinda guarantee that.
There's hardly ever that balance between the two.
When you start a family, the most important thing becomes the children's future, and I personally, would try to do anything in my power to make sure that they have the best start possible. Even if the worst happens and you can't afford the best school, all you can do as a parent is try to balance it out and teach them everything you know. You have to make the best of any situation. It's just annoying and frustrating that that has to be the case for those who are less fortunate money-wise.

hmmm.. well I guess we can at least say that the more things change the more they stay the same.. before only rich people could go to college.. now only rich people can go to really good prep-schools/colleges.. every bit as cut-throat as nature itself..

It's nature wrapped in civilised package. At least there's more opportunity out there however small and unjust. There's nothing to stop parents trying though.

absolutely.. many beautiful and useful things were born of adversity.. but it makes me wonder if.. even more wonderful things could come into existence if the bar was raised.. and the competition starting line didn’t start at “how much does your family make?”

That would be a wonderful world to live in. It seems that money is the driving force for most people and it's a sad fact that people with less are looked down upon by those who have.
How do you help people see that money isn't everything, and that potential cannot be bought but instead that everyone has it?! Mass mentality is hard to change. On the other hand, there's the question that would we be giving up that drive to push ourselves forward because of this adversity. Like you said "... many beautiful and useful things were born of adversity ...".

Maybe. What's the answer though. It would take so much to change things. I know there are many who probably have the same opinion, but the idea of community is so divided now ... everyone is in their own little world ... but that's what the modern day has created. Who knows how bad it is going to get.

i think very very bad.. because we live in a non-sustainable world.. it has to come crashing down.. by design.. i just hope that humanity will survive.. the transition will be rough... and it won't happed until there is no other option.. by necessity.. balance will be restored..

Reminds me of 'The Day After Tomorrow' or something. And it most likely would be worst than that. I do agree on the necessity issue ... when people are pushed, they fight back. At the very least, there are a portion of people working towards solutions ... recycling, turning switches off, walking instead of driving etc etc. I know that's miniscule but it's something. The people with bad attitudes need to kicked into gear.

Is there a med to make people more environmentally friendly because now I think there should be! Hehe, you could invent that. Therapy is a good idea, though we're not big on it here.
Psychology sounds interesting. I touched on it in uni from a theoretical standpoint and it was mainly to do with Freud. I would imagine yours is completely different from that being medical (disorders and all that).

well I am a student so the doctor's wouldn't let me diagnose and treat.. but it's pretty straightforward.. if the patients don't lie to you about their symptoms.. or fake them.. which unfortunately most of them would.. mostly so they could get a place to stay for a week.. free food.. and medications.. but.. oh well.. if we don't have enough crazy people.. they might as well fill those beds.. i just wish they would not lie.. it diminishes those with real psychiatric illness

lunarsparks In reply to simple-squamous [2010-11-26 18:42:38 +0000 UTC]
I get what you are saying. Those people must not give a crap about anyone else ... they just want what they can get regardless of who suffers for it. I can imagine that the ones who lie make you wary of everyone ... you know having to figure out who really needs the help so making the process a lot slower. It's bad in the sense that they could give those with psychiatric illnesses a bad rep ... as if they are all making it up. You are there to balance them out, I guess.

yes.. it is where very highly specialized technicians and cardiologists map the electrical pathway from your SA node to the AV node and ablate all abarrent pathways that may cause ectopic or escape beats..
who do you know that has to go through that?

Actually, it's my mum whose going through it end of next week. I basically wanted to see if you knew anything about it that would make it clearer in some way, and you did. Off the top of my head though, I don't know what SA and AV stand for ... so ... just looked it up ... Sinoatrial and Atrioventricular ... got it!

i would make sure they have pacemakers already customized for her before they start.. just incase they go to far and ablate the good path.. i know her surgeon won't appreciate you suggesting that but I would at least raise the question.. what the "plan B" is if they destroy the wrong pathway..
don't ask with your mom around it might frighten her
