Description Several years ago I came up with the idea of building a layout based on the stillborn South Penn Railroad. Oddly enough this layout concept was also stillborn as I didn't even complete the history of the prototype before I changed my mind.

The South Penn was to be part of the New York Central system competing with its counterpart Cumberland Valley in the PRR's system. The South Penn successfully graded several miles of track as well as a few tunnels, but as they started work in the most difficult part of the alignment, the company went bankrupt without laying any track. The grade (including tunnels) was later sold to the builders of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a portion is still in use today.

So, if the line had actually been completed and been a subsidiary of the NYC, here is what it could have looked like. I found my original drawing of a SPRR AS616 and decided to do a new version of the drawing on a DRS-4-4-1500. This is the bottom scheme. The top was just an idea I had as I was thinking about how to draw the lightning stripes, but I liked it.

Now that I've minorly revived this idea, I might actually take it somewhere.

Great idea and look. Would the roster be like the PL&E, a microcosm of the NYC?
