Description
The Northern Lights, 8th October 2011 !Shot in Norway, Bodoe, local Mjelle
The night me and my friend Gaute was going to shoot a Draconid meteor shower ! The auroras was weak when we arrived at the spot the Auroras was weak lines crossing the sky.
We saw some meteors flaming up around on the night sky ! But the auroras activity was exploding, suddenly there where a Corona on top of us, seen here -> [link] !
The lights around us was amazing, strong green and red colours between the columns and lines !
We thinked about shooting some reflections with the small waters behind us, so we took the gear and ran over there !
The Northern lights was so extreme that figuring out a nice setting for the show was changing rapidly within the hour !
I like how this picture came out ! lines and columns fading over the little water that was quiet, no wind, no waves !
Also in the picture it`s evident the movement and activity of the light ! As some parts fade out and others allmost over exposed !
Have a great weekend everyone ! for more of my aurora shots : [link] please have a look

I must apologize that my critique will not criticize, but the photo you have made is truly beautiful to me, and I can only tell you why. First, I was attracted to the shades of blue and green, which are exotic and deeply satisfying to my heart, which is where this photo strikes. Your composition is perfect with the imposition of grey rock that is both cold and warm at the same time, and aiming the eye to the right hand third of the frame. The orientation of the camera is obviously intentional thereby, and the presence of the photographer is thus felt, giving the viewer a sense of familiarity with the location, space, and moment in time. That's quite a feat for such a place so far from the viewer's reach. Thus it succeeds as the gift you that intended it to be, expressing the generosity of your soul. Very well done indeed!

First of all, let me just say that I am very jealous that I haven't seen this in person and you have haha. Ok as far as the picture goes. I do find the composition to be strong. I like that the pool reflection draws you from the bottom of the image to the top where the aurora actually is. I also like that there is an almost a symmetrical look to the image as well (really good use on the rule of thirds). The problem that I do have with this picture is that the rocks in the foreground are not in focus. They are definitely a bit fuzzy and with your D300s I know that you can get tack sharp focus. I looked at the settings and it showed that you are at f/2.8 and that is where the issue is. Your depth of field is way too shallow for this image. I understand that it was a longer exposure so you wanted more light but your aperture wasnβt where to obtain it. Your aperture should be generally around f/8 to f/16 for landscape. If the picture appears too dark, you can either slow down your shutter to obtain more light or bump up your ISO so your cameras sensor is more sensitive to the light. It is all trial and error but just looking at this scene, I would have probably had my aperture set to around f/11-f/13, shutter at 20-30seconds and ISO set between 100-400. So for this image, I would say that it is a good image but for technical reasons it is held back from how strong it really could be. I hope this helped e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/bβ¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="

Well, thanks but before you comment the technical settings, you better shoot some image to ! And in the pitch black night
Your`e settings will have maybe a little tiny part with auroras ! And there`s the challenge capturing the aurora at the same shutter and F related to the landscape around. If you are into advanced HDR and photo bracketing, might work, with a hard noisy image. The ISO also change the strength of the colour, makes it more or less unreal. hmm 20- to 30 seconds you would had a green water a wiped out aurora on the sky. no "wow-capture". How strong it "really" could be, hmm hard for you to say who wasn`t there
The ISO image on the D300s is good to say 1600 acceptable noise image, and 2-5 seconds exposure to capture the light with the right kind of movement.
any less ISO and longer shutter wipes the auroras away. The Northern Light moves rapidly and intence ! The light is moving all the time out there. So read the text too and you will find some notice there to how it actually was shooting the auroras that night
Thanks for the construtive feedback on the composition in general
Shoot more nightshots on let`s say aircrafts, light trails, and well have a look, quite easy to predict the path and light cause it`s constant.
If you have a D3s at 12000 ISO + and F16 and 5-10 seconds hmm dreaming with bracketing too ! You`ll might be into something of a killer shot !

This is such a fantastic piece! I can see the magic that you also felt while watching the Aurora's.
The idea of capturing the reflections as well add so much more beauty.

This is the next kind of photography I'd love to do as I have never seen it. Could you please tell me the best time to come to Norway to do it. I like in the middle of the UK and could probably come for 4-5 days depending on the cost! Big thanks in advance- Jamie

I see that Well here we have a lot of eagles, BodΓΈ is known for all the eagles here ^^ I`m going to try photographing them now !
Just going to buy a 150-500, need to start with something cheap !

I tried the 150-500 and i found it a little soft at the 500 end, I eventually bought the 50-500 which I found to be much sharper. If you can try and test one before you buy. I also found the 400mm f5.6 to be a great prime lens and not too expensive. Have you considered second hand you get more lens for your money.
If I get over next year you are welcome to try my 600mm

Are the shows predictable and are they every night or does it depend on the conditions?
π: 0 β©: 1
SindreAHN In reply to Jamie-MacArthur [2012-03-14 20:06:17 +0000 UTC]
the shows is predictable, and allmost every night But the weather is quite unpredictable, my last aurora picture from the 9th of March, i`ve waited 3 hours to get
It does depend on the conditions to but next year there would be a "solar max" the year in the cycle of 11 years when the solar activity is high, and the auroras is active !
