I love how you drew backgrounds. The tree and shadow of its leaves and holes. And the grasses. I like the way you used white outlines of the tree trunk I think one can clearly see the rays of sunlight in more darker atmosphere but the feeling of dazzling sunlight are well expressed. I like the girl's facial expression, matching the refreshing outdoor environment. Except maybe she should squint her eyes a bit, since you made efforts to express all the rays of sunlights and her arm pose? Nice work

Thank you I haven't done backgrounds in a while so I'm glad it turned out ok. It was really challenging doing this kind of lighting with all the rays of sunlight in the gaps of the tree, still it was fun~

That's a really good point I was focusing more on emphasizing her eyes so I didn't realize she could be squinting at the sunlight. Haha Thanks for the feedback!

You are welcome! In drawing from imaginations, I find it unexpected that drawing needs logical or scientific concerns to mimic real life. I thought only one needs imaginations as drawing from imagination is my new endeavor. Then I recently learned there is something called artistic license. I guess I am too early in the learning stage to apply artistic license, but in drawing dropped (cat) shadows I just draw whatever shape I want. Haha

Actually, at first all I could perceive were her mesmerizing eyes and rays of sunlight. You've done the eyes so well and they kept stealing the scene. I didn't even notice she is wearing a bit revealing clothes. I guess they also mesmerized you as well

I've noticed most artists need to rely on references to be able to create quality work, drawing purely from imagination is really hard but I guess it's a goal we're all working towards. But that's really interesting, I was kinda familiar with the concept of an artistic license but I never thought it actually had a name. But like you said where drawing is surprisingly full of logic and theory that needed to be learned and not just fueled by imagination, those with an 'artistic license' would have earned it by learning all the theory before abandoning it all together in the end.

Kinda ironic isn't it? You have to spend years studying and perfecting all the fundamentals until you're allowed to chuck 'em all out the window so you can do what you want. It's a strange system but I guess it works well

And yeah haha, the eyes are meant to take your attention away from the errors I made in the girl's figure. I blame the high angle

I also could see the world of difference in the quality in using references or not. In drawing cats, it's getting easier to draw from a reference. I haven't thought of that as a goal although the drawing life would be so much easier with that level of skills. If that is the goal you have to practice and practice with some strategy in studying anatomy, textures and designs, than blindly googling for certain photos. There are so many categories to study, like costume designs, all the different trees, humans and animals and their poses, buildings of different eras, scenery and weather effects, etc. I could see why mangaka might need an assistance to draw backgrounds or venture out to the real life scene with a camera. Whether you strategically study for the near future needs or just gather things as you need just before, I guess you have to choose the fun things that works for you I am more observing mode at the detailed varieties of tree branches, barks and leaves on the street than before in every days life.

Yeah, studying and  perfecting in order to ditch them all. It's like collecting and carrying all the papers and books as you hiking up the mountain top to throw them all out and looking down to see them crash hard  But then if your drawings are lousy in other areas, there is a danger that you might be considered "ignorant" than you "ignored" it for artistic license

The eyes, they are so amazing! And I could see other outlines are rather weak, comparing to her eye lashes and eye lines to catch one's attention

Exactly, wherever I look it seems the one of the best pieces of advice for improving is 'draw what you see, not what you know'. In theory though let's say after drawing so many cats, all the anatomy and possible variations in texture and design will become second nature to a point you can make amazing artwork without the need for reference. However I think perhaps no matter how much experience and skill you have one will always have to reference from real life. After all, art is about making something new rather than recreating what you know.

And still... you could argue that in order to create something new you have to come up with something new yourself, and not from what already exists. That takes us away from real life as we know it, hence we need to draw from imagination...aaand we're back to where we began

Not sure where I was going with this, all I did was manage to confuse myself
Still, I guess it's worth mentioning, ha.

Ahah, that's a perfect analogy for it. And the higher you climb the harder all the books and paper crash onto the ground

Oh dear look at all this writing... There aren't many people on the internet that could make me break my 1-2 sentence policy

Too used to draw from photo references, my way of drawing is stroking lines and curves in what angles than drawing separate entities like eyes, nose and tails might look like. So I guess I am drawing from the advice you mentioned. But then the poses that I have tried are limited, like still shots and front views that I am not near the skill level to draw without a reference But it seems I have developed different skills so far, like how to draw other furry animals (I had no hard time drawing a horse or a hawk) with a reference than cat alone. I like to draw more dynamic poses of cats, like hunting or jumping. Your theory might be true; one day, I might reach that level If there is something like a wooden joint cat doll I can use, I might improve faster? Looking for cat pose references with different breed of cats takes time than actually draw them. And you might notice the quality difference whether I used a reference or not (when I had failed to find fitting ones).

You are confusing me as well.   The one I don't get is the last sentence of your 1st paragraph. Is it like giving to an ordinary subject a new perspective or new meaning? That is a really deep concept and I haven't really thought about that in drawings. I recently read regarding writings though. One is about giving new meanings. There is a Korean word "flower jealous cold," indicating a chilly Spring weather. Everyone hates prolonged cold Spring weather, but the one who named the pretty word gave a new meaning to the weather in the perspective of how nature works. Another one is the impacts we get from cliche expression get diminished as the expression get more familiar to us. A beautiful girl. Too abstract and we are not impressed by it much. A girl we might turn our heads back when we pass the girl. Better but not quite. The job of a novelist is to keep correcting the expression to describe in a new and fresh way. What do you think is new drawings?

Maybe related to drawing new would be developing one's style. The advice that I found that seems quite sound on the Internet was that drawing from reference and imagination. So not copying other person's styles. If I can draw without a reference it might be easier to develop a unique style than being busy learning how to draw properly. In human character drawings, there are Disney style and Japanese anime style among others. I like how your style are closer to Japanese one but different. If one can come up with ones like Peter Schultz's Snoopy style, that would be ideal. I guess one can use others' style as a stepping stone to leap high but if not, at the end of the day, you have refined a style the creator might do far better.

Haha, I guess we have carried away by the notion of "artistic license, " especially when you find its irony. It is really fascinating when we are in the producing side. I mentioned it since I have kept criticizing your drawings about tiny hand. So I wanted to tell you there are not really wrong drawings, even though one can improve. I guess we can appreciate some famous artist's drawings more. In Henri Mattisse', some of his drawings look so flat but we can see he chucked away so many things and his colors leave us vivid impressions. We can still think about our artistic license on the way before we reach the mountain top, as well
