Description
Hi there! So here's my first tutorial ^^ It's the method I'm currently using for my underwater backgrounds (Steps 2 and 3 are used by me so oftenly!). It's pretty basic, with only 9 steps (8 if you don't consider opening sai as one XD). Please tell me if there are any spelling/grammar mistakesIf you have any questions, feel free to ask
The tools I used here were pretty much the pen tool and the blur tool only. ( Blur tool <3 What would I do if you didn't exist? TvT ) And yes, I pick my blue shades randomly everytime. That way they hardly ever will look the same.
I might do a Photoshop Version of it too. The Photoshop underwater bg is still the same as before so it's not even close to this one. It looks worser e-e I haven't used Photoshop much since I started using Sai so there wasn't much of a progress on that...OTL
Well, I hope you find it useful
Please let me know if you use this in one of your drawings. I'd love to see it ^^
Examples of drawings (by me) in which I used this process:

This was so so useful! I was trying to figure out how to draw something where an anime version of me was underwater (symbolizing the fact that I'm practically drowning in my emotions) and when I came across this, I absolutely loved it and thought it was absolutely PERFECT!

Umm, I have a question, what colours should you use for skin underwater?
π: 0 β©: 1
Sirenilily In reply to DevilGal23 [2014-04-21 12:09:29 +0000 UTC]
Hm...what I usually do (because I'm lazy, haha) is color the skin like I would if the character wasn't underwater and I copy the background layer and put it on top of the drawing, ajusting the opacity for that. I think you could use the Overlay option for that but I'm not sure.
If you don't want to use this method, I recommend using a bluish white (for white skin) and shade with variations of it, applying yellow for the light parts (like in this picture: www.deviantart.com/art/Underwa⦠or taking the base skin color and shading colors you usually use for skin and mixing it with the blue tones you used for the background so you get the colors you need for the shading. There are many methods for doing it, just remember it has to have a bluish (sometimes even purple-ish) tone to it ^^

Oh, excuse my original comment - I thought the bubble tutorial was yours as when I looked at it both of these tutorials had the same username but I was a mistaken, also because I saw very similar bubbles on this tutorial at the end, again I was mistaken, my bad! In any case, as I said, I love this tutorial, it goes great with this one for someone like me that is not at all skilled at doing backgrounds whatsoever: electrical-socket.deviantart.cβ¦
Anyway, this tutorial, is by far the best underwater background tutorial I have found, in my opinion, which gives us room to do as we please to make the background totally original and our own.

Sirenilily In reply to sassawj [2013-10-02 14:19:59 +0000 UTC]
Haha, it's fine ^^ The bubbles do look alike
I'm not a big fan of doing backgrounds so I try to make them in a simple way but still looking great
I'm glad you think this is the best underwater background tutorial Another thing I was aiming for (in addition to the ones I said in the other reply) was to give people some space to create too
You can always change a step here and there and get a good result or not. Experiencing is really important too. Just use what I say here the way it fits you and your style and my work here is done

I just want to comment to tell you how much I love this tutorial! Both this tutorial and the bubble tutorial go hand in hand, they are easy to understand, short and simple, yet the end result looks amazing no matter the skill level, and of course as I practice the better I am getting at these bubbles, which you have made incredibly fun for me to doodle up in my underwater background. Thank you for posting these!

Thanks for taking a part of your time to comment ^^
I'm glad you love this tutorial I was aiming exactly for that when I was creating it: keeping it simple and easy to understand, and keeping the quality no matter what skill level who is reading it has
As a self-taught artist, I know these things are super important for beginners who use tutorials to improve their own styles
I haven't done a bubble tutorial yet but I can if there's enough interest
