Description
I have a WIP thread going over at the Cartography Guild site for the color process for Bourmout and while working on that I decided that this setup would be a nice attempt. So I did a model of the town to get a feel fro the building heights and such. Then drew up a pencil version to use with the map. I will be trying to do something similar but more involved with the color version. Here's the WIP thread - www.cartographersguild.com/towβ¦
Some people had asked about getting a print of this map so I made them available on Red Bubble.
You can check them out at the link - www.redbubble.com/people/sirinβ¦
Other maps and assorted stuff....

The perspective really adds a nice touch.

Thanks Darth. Yeah, I should be doing a bit more of that.

This is done far too rare. I mean the perspective view. If there's a perspective view you get a feel for a city. A bird view map is not so important. In my whole RPG Gamemaster time I've never used a map to show the group where the mad man lives...

Thanks Will.
I agree. I think it really helps make a connection and feel for the place.

Thanks Franc. I'm trying to put more planning into my work.
And more accuracy.

I love the way you do your colors but you could always go a little more wiled and make them non local color.

Do you mean something like yellow for grass instead of green? Or more like magenta for grass?
[serious question though]

Either or... Just build a color scheme around one. Maybe a triadic color scheme?

Well, the color version is most of the way done already but I will consider that for future pieces.
Sometimes I try odd colors but they don't seem to go over as well with people.
I do need to start planning my color schemes before I start laying down color. I usually just start in and then think about it later which I know is the wrong approach. I just want to get started - patience and planning. Long slow lessons.

hmmm It could be because the client has seen previous pieces and expects something similar to them. If you made a few samples show that varied color schemes are possible. They may seek you for just that.
I sort of plan them out. I pick three base colors the work my way around the piece adding tone and so on.
lol Its funny how some times the planning takes longer then the actual piece but it wouldn't look as good with out the planning.

Thanks Stephen.
I think you could. The patience part is one of the big elements.

Thx.Β Growing up I like to draw and doodle but I was discouraged from doing so with, "STOP WASTING THAT D****N PAPER".

Thanks Tzalek.
Yeah, it's very clean and neat. The color version will not be quite so neat.

Color is nice too! But I like b/w styles for maps much

I hear ya. Color versions of B/W pieces are often not as compelling as the original.

Thanks Bogie. Since getting more active on the Guild I have been trying to find things that take my maps a step further.
The perspective was one of those ideas. I'm really enjoying the Guild.

The Guild is a great place.Β My mapping revolves mostly around DundJinni, and the DundJinni Forums is where I "grew-up" as a mapper.Β Unfortunately it is very quiet at DJ and the Cartographer's Guild is currently a much more active site.

That's always a sad thing to see a site once active slow or stop activity. Have people from the DJ site come over to the Guild?

Some have, others have just moved on.Β We suffered the double whammy of a massive attack by spammers that forced us toΒ make it difficult to register, that prevented a lot of new people joining.Β At about the same point in time the owner of the software and the website seems to have disappeared.Β She has not responded to any attempts to contact her.Β So there has not been an upgrade to the program or any website maintenance for several years.Β That caused problems for people wanting to buy the software, and big problems for people as they got new computers, or tried to recover from hard drive crashes.Β Β It is a little tricky installing it on Win7, and Very difficult, bordering on impossible to install on Win 8 or any of the newest versions of Mac.Β I just installed it on Win 7 without any issues but others have had problems.
Anyway,Β my favorite website is not what it used to be.

Well that sucks. My experience with developers, which is pretty extensive, is that they can be just as sketchy as artists at times. I have had to give up on some software over the years for somewhat similar reasons.
I hope the Guild is active for many years to come. It's a unique place.
