Description
A while back, in September, I put out the map of Greyvast , which was a challenge map for the Guild.
That spurred on a bunch of development and sketches and such. It took a lot longer than planned, but now Formene is done.
My patrons helped fund this. Trying to fund development of large projects is still a challenge.

In the lands of Greyvast, a realm near to the borders of Night and the far expanses of Grizhnor, is a village that sits deep in the Llani Forsests region.
That forest is one of the last borders between the Hundrun region and the broken realm, which is itself losing ground to the slow creep of the desolation of DuSu.
The village of Formene is at a crossroads between many regions. It sits on a raised plot of rock at the southern end of a swath of highland, out in the sea of trees.
As the name implies, this village is populated by men of the south who were pushed northward over time by the by the relentless destruction of their homes and lands over generations.
Formene was one of the earliest settlements that the people of the Hundrun [various elven Hundin] approved of, and even aided in various ways.
Which was unusual as the Hundin are a wild and natural people who live directly with the rough and rugged lands of Greyvast.
They are not primitives, but could be seen as such by those who do not know them better.
Highly knowledgeable and skilled, the Hundin choose this life. Everyday.
They are capable of city building and could raise a spectacular empire if they saw fit, but they do not see value in such things.
The men from the south are the Remnant of Solis, the Rimses and the Solren.
They are not the only men in Greyvast, but they are rumored to be the only "civilized" men.
At it's origin, Formene was a meeting place, on high ground, at a crossroads.
The forests of Llani are vast and wild. And they are dangerous.
Without a guide, travelers would be led astray, if not become a meal for the myriad of hungry ones out in the mists.
And travelers must know, the green is not their friend. Or not all of it, at any rate.
Nor even some of the stone beneath their feet. Strange forces are at work here.
Strange and powerful.
And that is the setting where Formene sits; a comfortable illusion of civility
in a dangerous sea of leaf and mist, stone and shadows.
Have a great week. Cheers, J

I wished you would work for Ulisses. A german company who publishes The Dark Eye an pen and paper RPG. Their maps are good, but you are amazing, Mate!

I did a small bit of work for them a while back.
Most of their map work is done in-house.
The work I did was actually for Ulisses North America for Warhammer though.

Yeah, I think they have people they use for the Dark Eye stuff.
I wouldn't mind doing some of that.

Very good. We're on the same wavelength. I've got a whole bunch of these small villages in the works, with an overall view up top and a map view on the bottom, similar color for foliage, raw umber for roofs. Shadows on the roofs AND shadows on the ground gets tricky, but you've got it all squared away.

I have some new works that are several views, almost more like site plans, but illustrative.
The shadows are definitely challenging to keep straight.
The results are good though, so it's definitely worth the effort.
I can't wait to see your new ones. I always enjoy your work.

No. Part of that is the issue of how I would have to deal with tax stuff for sales in VAT countries.
I have a fair amount of fans in the EU, so that would be a significant problem to deal with.
Plus, with my work schedule, I am so busy most of the time, I'm not sure I could handle the extra work, on top of actually creating the maps.
That said, I am at a point that I might begin putting something together.
Some of the stuff I've recently done for Greyvast seems like it may be cohesive enough to warrant a small book.
I hesitate because when I do the cost to profit ratio, it is a lot of work and cost for a gamble on small sales, as compared to commissioned work.
And then I need to learn the layout software. But I am getting into that soon.
I need to even for some patreon stuff I have planned.

Yes, that is true.
I need to do one.
There's so much stuff I need to learn - EU tax stuff, book formatting, etc.
And then of course, some additional free time.

I'm pretty sure I say that all the time, but this may be one of my favorite. Can I please put a little beehole on one of those old stones ? 'would like to live there forever

hmm, maybe we could put some beehives over on the big standing stone outcrop.
Then I need a little bridge, for the beekeepers. That might be an interesting addition.

Good art takes time. Don't beat yourself up. Those trees alone will eat a lot of time. I personally need a lot of time just to think about the design, but you must have that one mastered already

Thanks Larb
I tired several colors but ultimately stuck with the golden roofs.
They go nicely with all the trees.

Yeah it really works. It's actually a pretty limited palette you've used but it's really effective. And the warm coloured roofs go well with the mainly stone and limewashed walls.

The more I do these, the more limited seems to be a good choice.
Certain things can stand out more, usually.
