Dang, absolutely gorgeous work! I absolutely love the second one, but they're all amazing. Have you ever thought about being some sort of conceptual artist? I think you'd be amazing at it.

Well, I am sort of trying to get myself fluent with some new styles and subjects somewhat for that purpose.
I think I may work a bit too slowly to cut it in the concept world. Seems like video game and movie concept artists do an awful lot of speedpainting and not as much full illustration stuff. I've done a bit of speedpainting but need to get faster I guess.
I wouldn't mind because I love concepting stuff. Most everything I draw/paint is just out of my head.

Yeah, that's a great idea! I've been trying to do the same thing. I really want to be a conceptual creature designer, so I'm trying to branch out and do things that aren't wolves. I feel like I'm really far behind, though, so I know the feeling.
They do! It really scares me, personally. I see a lot of great artists whipping out amaaazinggg speedpaints and landscapes in maybe an hour or two. I know people get faster with time and they have all day to work on that sort of stuff, but it's still intimidating!
Yeah! I think that's great. It really is the ideas that count, and the ones that come out of your head are really original. I've heard it said over and over that your ideas count more than anything, even your technical skill, so that's a good thing you've got going for you.

One thing to remember with a lot of the artist that do speedpainting - they begin painting but they aren't always painting with a hard defined target. They let themselves evolve the painting. Conceptualizing often requires you to work toward a hard defined target. So trying to merge those can be more difficult. I start with a concept, pencil it and then paint it. That makes it more difficult since I have defined it on paper first. For speedpainting it would be better to just start trying to paint it without drawing it first. That's where my conflict usually starts. I think we both might share the same problem there.

You're totally right! I agree. I always have things defined in my head first, almost completely. But they often develop when I'm drawing them and sometimes morph into something completely different as I draw, which is both cool and frustrating. I agree there too though, it is really hard to do, especially to just start painting like that- I certainly can't. I'm working on it and getting better, but I'm very far from being able to speedpaint like the pros do- it really is amazing what they do when you think about it. Yeah, I feel like I don't have enough skill/knowledge/whatever else to be able to do what they do yet. Ah, well, better keep practicing. There's so dang much to learn.

Do you favor any one over the others?

If I really had to, it'd be the middle one.Β  I just like the design and the flow of the whole thing.Β  You're welcome, btw.

I was curious - people seem to like the enclosed handle/guard thing.
It does make for a more flowing design.
The line of the blade just continues the curve down passed the handle.

CrystalSabre In reply to SirInkman [2014-02-02 18:51:30 +0000 UTC]

As a rule, I don't normally like that design.Β  But your one, I make the exception and like, because it flows so well.Β  Normally, I'd go for a sword that just has the handle, see.

SirInkman In reply to CrystalSabre [2014-02-02 18:57:01 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree.Β
The reality is that enclosed handles are usually uncomfortable and often pinch the hand or just get in the way.

I like the one in the middle with the finger guard. Beautiful shape.Β

I've always liked blades and swords.Β  If I didn't have to consult and compromise over the spending of funds, I would definitely own at least one sword/saber/katana.Β

SirInkman In reply to KirstenRowe [2014-02-03 16:27:18 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I've been there. I would've had a lot more swords if someone hadn't been so frugal.... but that's in the past. Now my own frugality will have to keep me from buying them.
I find the curve of a line is very important. Just a bit too much one way and the curve to me gets broken and the design is lost. I do a lot of erasing and redrawing lines until I feel the curve is just right.

mouseanderson In reply to SirInkman [2014-02-02 19:21:32 +0000 UTC]

The top, I think because it would be the easiest to wield. The scabbard on that one is the most complete.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SirInkman In reply to mouseanderson [2014-02-02 19:34:47 +0000 UTC]

That one is probably my favorite as well. I like doing the full scabbards but it's more time consuming so most don't get the full treatment. And you're right - it would be the easiest to wield. I like the handle best too.
