Description The mysterious Gu Ronin faces off against the well traveled Aurora the Black Crane . His entry is here .

_______________________________

The sun was high, and Aurora, in search of fresh challenges, was wondering the countryside. Walking the opposite way, ahead of her, was an armoured figure with a plethora of weaponry.
'Halt' she cried, in rusty yet usable japanese. The figure halted, saying nothing. It turned its masked head to the side, as if curious of this strange creature.
Drawing her blade, Aurora cries out 'Come, warrior' before striking out with her outlandish weapon.

The masked warrior moved quickly, avoiding the oncoming juggernaught of blades, even as they tore up the bridge floor. With a quick flick of the wrist, throwing blades were launched towards the Valkyrie.

Aurora moved quickly, avoiding the blades with ease. Even as she avoided the attack, she was pulling her Lunar Crescent back in. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw that the masked warrior was much faster then she thought, throwing her weight forwards, she narrowly avoided the jagged blade, thrust where she had but moments before been.

Retrieving the freefloating Lunar Crescent with her left hand she spun on her feet, catching the mans jagged blade midswing.

Then he did something she did not expect. He let go of his sword. Releasing his sword threw her off balance, the resistance once there now gone. The warriors left arm came up, the one with blades, catching her right hand, and with a sharp yank he pulled her in close, where her Lunar Crescent couldn't be used as well. His right arm snaked up, under the chain on the front of her armour, and a steel grip engulfed her head. With a violent push, he slammed her head first into the bridges decks, cracking them slightly.

Aurora lost conciousness.

Gu looked down at the form beneath her, as if curious. he knelt, and prodded her cheek. Gu inspected her face, turning it to the left and right. Gu seemed puzzled. It shrugged, and after retrieving its throwing blades, left.

/shitty story

Damn I'm out of practice, it's been about 8 - 10 months since my last OCB, and I think it shows. Especially in how long it took me (3 day duel, done nothing but work on this really).

Apologies to Terny if I screwed up the Lunar Crescent, ye mentioned it was a chain weapon and I tried to work out how.

Terny is also someone I've always wanted to showdown with, ever since Violence Fetish (or Judgment/Redemption which ever one it was). I'm glad we got the chance to duke it out.

Gu Ronin is mine.

Well, try to avoid lots of squares, and repetetive poses. Keep text per panel small, even in exposition.
Creativity in battles, perspectives and so on is always good.

If you would allow me my colloquialisms, sweet fight dude.
The use of perspective is particularly impressive.

i completely agree with what previous people have been saying- this is much faster paced and dynamic then before. i especially love the head-smashing at the end.

but may i direct you to the written compliment of the piece, i know its not the centre-point but i can't let it go unattended:

the head-smahing picture is strong and powerful and definate; when you write about it happening it lacks that emphasis- they're not sitting under a tree having a picnic- he is mashing her face into the floor. don't neglect the five senses- they help build a much more cohesive mental picture- you can't always draw smell or sound- but you can write about it fairly easily

look at your use of commas - in some places semi-colons would be more appropriate

keep an eye on your vocabulary- your a clever enough bloke not to need to repeat words as description. referring to 'blades' and 'jagged'

'Aurora, in search of frsh challenges' {fresh}
'the resistance once {their} now gone' {there} (you plum)

I was lazy and kind of wrote that merely as a panel by panel description of the action, next time it'll be better. And oh yea, there will be a next time...
I shall keep ye advice in mind for it though.

Oh, and I'm gonna go fix those spelling mistakes.

dude, you pulled out the stops for this one!

you really went way beyond what i was expecting subconsciously. i mean, look at this! i never saw perspective and dynamic angles from you before! D8

you deserve the win for this one man. theres just no way i can beat this with the time and busy schedule i have to put up with.

Ellundiel [2009-05-11 13:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Now there's some real improvement here in your art that I havent seen in a while, and I'm impressed with most of the piece, but there's a few things I can point out-

Wood doesn't rip up quite like that, it's going to bend and snap, so more debris would be good, and there should be more flow in the way what debris you have comming out, higher in the back, lower in the front and the wood getting ready to and/or snapping at the blade.

In that same scene, Aurora's left foot (right for viewers) looks ackwardly positioned, turn it out a little.

In the scene with the throwing knives, bring the sword up, it looks like he's floating there, rather than running.

SirThresher In reply to Ellundiel [2009-05-12 06:34:00 +0000 UTC]

Cheers. Yea I see what you mean about the feet.
Ohh, I see what ye mean about the floating. Shall have to work on that.
Destruction of the terrain will be big in my duels from now on, so I'll work on the breakage of wood.
Thanks for the input C:

Awesome entry. Very dynamic fighting.
Good angles too, I need to remember to work angles into my work, most are just flat shots...

SirThresher In reply to will2bill [2009-05-11 06:52:49 +0000 UTC]

I started doing dynamic shots because I got bored of redrawing the same image over and over with slight variations.
Thankee for the fave!

No problem.
Yeah, makes sense. I'm trying to master the art cause when I finally get round to doing Loan, it's going to need a lot more then just flat shots...a heck of a lot more.

pwned! xD

I really like the style, and it looks pretty realistic. I especially like the detail of the characters and background (the ripping of the wood)

I'm not very fond of the last panel, but I'm on a tight deadline.

And yes, Terny likes his characters to be very detailed.

Thankee!
