WOW. It's like someone took a brush dipped in red paint and swished it over each side of his face. *stares*

They're little gems and a pain to approach. Thankfully these guys were tame as they lived in a town park.

The Oregon Juncos and Gambel's quail in my backyard are pretty tolerant. If you're quiet when you go outside, they'll stay clustered around the tree, but the second you take a step off the back patio, they're gone.

You get Gambel's Quail in your yard?! They're fantastic looking birds! Envious! XD
Have you tried hand feeding them?

They're either California quail or Gambel's...not quite sure, can't get close enough to discern markings, and my binoculars aren't so great. >.<
I haven't tried hand-feeding them yet. Every time I go out and step off the porch, they spook and scatter. I suppose I could fill a bowl from the seed bucket, set up some kind of half-blind to shelter from the weather next to the tree where all the feeders are, and just wait for them to come back. I could also try and attract the finches, sparrows and chickadees that way. Even set up my camera on a tripod and take video.
