Description
aaaaand another pic i did for Starpoint Gemini 2, recently available on Steam's Early Accessstore.steampowered.com/app/236β¦full view
it was done in a hurry so im happy how it turned out even tho a lot of geometry is reused from other scenes. i tried to achieve an Earthly feel to it; a mix of New York, Golden Gate and 20. century-ish architecture being swallowed by techno stuff..

I don't understand the passion to create artwork like this. Of architecture, machinery, wide open space, environment... it's NOT that I don't appreciate it. I do. This is outstanding. But where does an artist's inspiration come from to create this? I find it abstract. What's in the corner over there? What are the buildings for? Where is this? I have so many questions about what I'm viewing. It's gorgeous. But what are these machines and buildings?Β

tnx!
Β this is a commercial thing so i dont have the time to think about it much..i just make one little sketch and hope for the best once i start modeling various parts...then i mix them up according to that. so there is not much logic, certainly no scientific explanation why is something there and what it's function is. it is just supposed to convey a certain feel about the planet that your ship has landed on ( in the game ) and let your imagination do the rest. it's more important to get that right, the composition, the lighting, mood..these things are hard and i'm still learning a lot. anyway, its not that hard to explain all that if you really need to since it's science fiction. well, as long as you don't do something toooo crazy, but even then, its great if the reactions is like ''omg wtf is THAT?? i totally wanna go there!''.Β take the Death Star, its ridiculously big and hard to explain but it works great in the film..
in this pic, i had to convey something a bit like earth in the future..the high tech buildings are being built on top of the old ones and the colors kind of reminds me of big american cities.. or at least something that doesn't look too much alien-ish...
the Atmosphere emitters, my old pic, has more thinking behind it..i really like the idea of terraforming so i tried to design something that actually has a function in the environment and it's a part of the story that im writing..when i do stuff for myself i tend to explain everything, even if its not important but it is to me : ))
still, there is soooo much scifi/fantasy art out there..i really bust my brain thinking what to do next and im happy when people feel something about it

Thanks for the awesome response! I love your idea of the new buildings atop the old ones. The layers of history. I also like how you mentioned that science fiction art shouldn't be too crazy. Maybe that's why I feel lost when looking at some sci-fi works of art. That's maybe what I was trying to explain in my previous comment. That integral balance between the viewer's imagination but also the thought and logic behind the artists' work.Β
*smiles*
