Description
Orphaned at a young age by an infrastructure failure, Parker Prophet grew up idolising two particular people. One was their aunt Barb Prophet, owner of the café Caffeine Kicks, who raised them after their parents died; the other was the Common Rider , the legendary hero of Elysium, who used his superhuman powers to protect people from disasters like the one that killed their parents. With conflicting ambitions to be a barista and to be a Contract Rider, most people wouldn't choose to combine both careers into one... but most people aren't Parker.Though Barb — always concerned for Parker's safety — was reluctant to support them in being a Rider, upon realising that they wouldn't be dissuaded, she decided to use her expertise as a former Rider system engineer to help them build the best belt and gear they could, combining their ingenuity and lateral thinking with her practical experience and safety measures. She also ensured that they received the best cybernetic hardpoints — necessary to operate "Roborider" armor like Parker's — that she could afford.
Parker launched into their career as Contract Rider Java with wide-eyed enthusiasm, delighting in meeting other Riders and constantly tinkering with their equipment for battling Geisters. Their view of the world was idealistic, even naïve, and they struggled when faced with situations like a brutal fight between Dolmen and Wyvern , the vigilante Ringo's attempt to give Elysium a "mercy killing", and — most notably — their discovery that the Common Rider was part of the Golgom conspiracy , forcing them to clash with their idol in battle.
Over time, however, Parker matured. They learned to accept that the world was more complicated than they had wanted to believe, and that the people they looked up to weren't flawless; at the same time, though, they never lost their idealism and belief in a better world. While they weren't always certain of the best way forwards, and sometimes felt the weight of others looking to them for guidance, they nevertheless did their best to embody the values they had seen in the Common Rider and inspire others to ride alongside them, towards the future.
As a Rider, Parker uses the Java System: a modular system of powered armor that they designed and built themself with help from their aunt Barb and advice from the members of CRChat, a web-chat server for fans of Contract Riders. Their belt, the Artisanal Driver, can be loaded with Coffee Pods that alter Java's form and abilities (as well as containing reservoirs of piping-hot, eternally-fresh coffee). By tipping the kettle on their belt while transformed, they can trigger a Java Press, a finisher corresponding to their current form.
In addition to their enhanced strength, speed and reflexes, Java wields the Scalding Saber — a sword that channels hot steam through its length — and the Chocolate Magnum, a handgun that fires powerful, sweet-smelling shots. These weapons can be combined into a large, two-handed gun/sword called the Half-Caff Buster. Java's Rider Machine is the Machine Steamer, a home-built bike composed of enough coffee machine parts that it's ambiguous if it legally counts as a vehicle; the steam that the bike produces can be used to create smokescreens and disorient foes.
The Java System's forms are:
- Java Serving Cappuccino — Java's default, most commonly used form. Well-balanced between speed and strength, Cappuccino is the form that most often uses the Scalding Saber in battle. In this form, the Java Press is a classic, well-studied Rider Kick, based on the Common Rider's signature finishing move.
Drop! The perfect cappuccino! Rich and delicious with a sweet kick. - Java Serving Espresso — A speedier, lightweight form with lower defenses to compensate; steam-powered speed boosters mounted on their legs allow them to move at incredible speeds. Espresso's Java Press, the Rider Rush, is a flurry of rapid-fire kicks.
Drop! The perfect espresso! Dark and bold, what a rush. - Java Serving Frappuccino — Centered on wielding cold temperatures, Frappuccino is equipped with the Javalanchers, gauntlets that fire icy projectiles, but their bulk means that Java's attacks are clumsier than in their base form. This form's Java Press is the Rider Freeze, which fires an ice shard into the enemy before kicking into it to finish them off.
Drop! The perfect frappuccino! Drink slowly to avoid brain freeze. - Java Serving Mocha — A long-ranged form with a special targeting visor, designed specially for use with the Chocolate Magnum; however, it's comparatively poor at close-range combat. In addition to the Chocolate Magnum, Mocha is armed with a shoulder-mounted pod that fires micro-missiles. Mocha's finisher is the Rider Shot, which fires a charged shot from the Chocolate Magnum at the enemy as they release a barrage from the missile pod.
Drop! The perfect Mocha! A creamy blend with a syrupy chocolate shot. - Java Serving Hot Chocolate — While a lack of caffeine makes this form more sluggish than average, it compensates with increased strength. This form wields the Steel Stir Stick, which burns enemies; the Steel Stir Stick can also be combined with their other weapons to form a sniper rifle or a spear. Hot Chocolate's Java Press is the Rider Burn, a superheated thrusting attack with the Steel Stir Stick.
Drop! The perfect Hot Chocolate! It's not coffee but careful, it'll burn. - Java Serving Mint Mocha — A form equipped with electric gauntlets that can shock enemies; however, this also makes it somewhat dangerous to use. As part of a running gag, Mint Mocha never actually gets used in the campaign, as it's a "toyline exclusive form". Its finisher, the Rider Electric, charges the gauntlets up before delivering an especially shocking punch.
Drop! The perfect mint mocha! So minty fresh it's electric. - Java Serving Full Menu — Intended as the ultimate culmination of the Java System, Full Menu brings together the abilities of all their forms. Full Menu wields the Assort Axe, an transforming axe/crossbow shaped like a café menu, which they can use to switch between the attributes of different forms; it can also be combined with the Chocolate Magnum and Scalding Saber to form the enormous Full-Caff Buster. Full Menu's finisher, the Assorted Break, is a powerful blow that can take the form of either a kick, an axe strike, or (with the Full-Caff Buster) a sword swing.
Drop everything! The coffee fueled evolution; Java Full Menu! The perfect assortment!
When Parker and their allies fought to prevent Marianne Chaumet's planned "ascension" for Luxe , Java was forced to fight the Common Rider, and even with the power of Full Menu they were knocked out of their transformation in a clash of Rider Kicks. Not long after, they discovered that their aunt Barb had been responsible for creating the monstrous power of the KT Strata Disk —something she claimed was necessary to keep Parker safe. With their faith in their aunt's judgement shaken, and a belief that they needed to be stronger than the Java System could manage in order to help their friends, Parker turned away from their Artisanal Driver in favour of the Blendriver: a prototype belt they had created during development of Java, which Barb had less involvement with than the final Java System.
- Contract Rider Java-X (Java Cross) — The X-Steam System (Cross Steam System) uses two Coffee Pods to manifest a pair of overlapping Roborider suits, granting Java-X a significant boost in strength and speed compared to Java; however, the Blendriver's incompatibility with Java's normal Coffee Pods means that this power comes at the cost of a lack of flexibility. Additionally, Java-X's speed is such that Parker sometimes struggles to control the form's momentum in battle. Java-X's finishing move, the Rider Cross Crusher, is a steam-propelled scissor kick enhanced by jagged spikes of Roborider suit material.
Press! The perfect combination! Java-X! A double serving of justice, au lait! - Java-X Perfection (Java Cross Perfection) — Constructed using copious amounts of K-stone dust provided by Morgan Rhys, the Perfectelator was designed to boost all of Java-X's statistics as far as they can go... which it succeeded in doing all too well. When Parker first attempted to use it during the Riders' battle with the resurrected Medusa Geister , the overwhelming power of Java-X Perfection burned out Parker's cybernetic implants and drove their Perfect Break kick out of control, sending them crashing into the roof of the cavern beneath Gaibhne in which they were fighting; the resulting cave-in opened a huge sinkhole under Gaibhne, and Parker was knocked unconscious and rendered unable to transform.
Rise! The perfect rider! Java-X... Perfection!
Following the disastrous debut of Java-X Perfection, Parker — now unable to transform — resigned themself to simply supporting their friends in the battle with Golgom.... but on returning to Caffeine Kicks, they discovered that Barb had made a deal with Hitomonji to collaborate with Golgom's plans in exchange for an assurance of Parker's safety. When a furious Wyvern attempted to kill Barb for this betrayal, Parker made a desperate bid to stop her, overriding the systems of a Gene Driver taken from Contract Rider Om3ga to make an impossible emergency transformation.
- Bio-Rider Wild — By using Om3ga's Gene Driver with the raven Gene Vial formerly used by Contract Rider Coven, and a transformation bullet belonging to the late Lone Rider Ringo, Parker transforms into Bio-Rider Wild, despite the system's incompatibility with their cybernetic implants. Agile and flexible, Wild is able to easily escape any grapple, and can use the Feathered Edge blades on their forearms to stave off foes who gets too close. The Ringo Sting on their left leg can inject foes with a weaker version of Ringo's potent venom, uncoiling to lash at the foe with their finisher, a side-kick known as the Gene Wildcard.
Transgenesis! Override! [Birds cawing mixed with scorpions scuttling and faint splashing water] Bio. Rider. Wild.
Through all of this, Parker realised that their approach had been wrong. The Contract Riders were strongest when working as a unit, complementing each others' strengths and making up for their flaws... and Parker was part of that. And so, using all of their experience with Rider systems — the Roborider technology of Java and Java-X, the Biorider technology of Wild, and even the Mahourider technology they used to create an override device for Mari — Parker had constructed a new belt, the Artisanal Driver Neo, that incorporated elements of all three types of Rider system; in principle, it would use a K-stone's energy field to bypass Parker's damaged cybernetics, and the biological properties of the crow gene vial to rectify any incompatibilities, allowing them to transform into Contract Rider Java once again. However, they didn't just stop at restoring their older forms.
- Java Triumph — By opening the Artisanal Driver Neo into the PhoeniXtriker, Parker unleashes the full power of all three components of their triple-threat "Miraider" system in a form that burns with heroic power. Java Triumph has access to a wide array of powers inspired by Parker's history and their friends: they can release a blast of scalding Robo Steam to push back foes and create cover; rocket themself forwards with incredible Robo Speed; unleash a disorienting Bio Shout of sonic energy; use Mahou Sparking to deliver a strike buzzing with light and energy; and create a wing-shaped Mahou Shield energy projection to protect their allies.
Java Triumph wields the X-Brewer (Cross Brewer), a chain-bladed weapon originally designed for Java-X . The X-Brewer can change between three modes and finishers: sword mode's Bio Slash; gun mode's Robo Shooting; and whip mode's Mahou Snap. Their most powerful finishing move, activated from their belt, is Maximum Rider Power; with an announcement of "Robo on! Bio on! Mahou on! Come On! Rider Kick!", they unleash a powerful Rider Kick, their technique drawing on everything they've learned and experienced for a unique and personal attack.
Overflow! Robo, Bio, Mahou, Let's Go! Imperfect Evolution! Java Triumph! Let's ride together!
Parker is played by SameAsItEverWoz , who also designed Java's forms (and gave me much-appreciated feedback on how their Rider form works for this), though I designed Bio-Rider Wild based on their suggestions. They're a fantastic character, and all of us at the table are agreed that they're the real "protagonist" of Contract Riders, as much as a collaborative roleplaying campaign can have one; Sarah has a real knack for designing fun, toyetic Riders and gear that always feel very authentic.
