Description
It's a lot harder to make one of these things than I could have imagined. When I was growing up, I had always wished that they made a BETTER version of Neon Genesis: Evangelion (this was long before the movies had come out). I appreciated Eva for it's realism, and was also bored by it. Wouldn't it have been possible to still tell the heart of the story without having to worry about all the drama/conspiracies/scientific mumbo-jumbo? I'm convinced that FLCL does just that--and far more--with about a quarter as much run time. Watch FLCL again and draw the parallels between the two shows--or to just reward yourself.
What do you think about the chart? Accurate much?

Love this chart
I might've had Haruko as chaotic neutral but with that spot taken so perfectly, this is probably best xD

I don't know, in the reality of things pretty much every character is chaotic in some respective form of way, and if not chaotic then they of course fall into the Lawful scheme because everyone in Furi Kuri is pretty extreme. Naota is pretty much the most clear headed of all of them and likely one of the only True Neutral characters. I'd say a few of these character's have the same alignment scheme as well. And Canti is actually really hard for me to classify in all of this, it feels like he's not really a good guy and more neutral (or stupid if that's an alignment), but he fits the role of Neutral Good well too. If I were to judge him on his idiotic actions I'd say Canti is like a three way between Chaotic Neutral, True Neutral, and Neutral Good; God what a bitch to classify. (There needs to be a stupid alignment.)
In respect of the character's positions and limitation on a full scale alignment system in Furi Kuri, I'm going to say this is spot on when comparing one character to another, however, it doesn't fit the perspective of the classical AD&D scheme of alignment. That's okay though because you are right, these are a pain in the ass to figure out. It would be easy if you could put multiple characters in one alignment, but obviously the idea is to showcase each individual alignment with a respective representative.
Anyways, loved it nontheless and I enjoy your work on Newgrounds.

Nice chart. I love how free FLCL is. Like, it could literally go anywhere. Now that you mention it. What didja think about Rebuild 1&2? Personally, I thought it was fantasmagorical.

I'm one of very few people that actually delved into Eva so deep that I know what the story is about on a strictly objective chronological level (like the Aliens are responsible for most of the conflict in the story level) and because of that it just makes the whole series even weirder.Β Β The movies were fine, and did a good job of capping off the series in a really gruesome and memorable way.
As for the latest movies, I think I'm going to hold off until all of them are out.Β That's really something I'd like to marathon in one sitting, mind fuck and all.

They have made a new version of Evangelion, if it's better, not sure. FLCL is definitely a series I can watch countless times and not get tired of it because it is so much of the awesome, or perhaps a revengeful lobster.
As for accuracy, for the most part I agree, although I would never really refer to Mamimi as "good" since she was very much driven by self-centered revenge in some way but keeping in with the aesthetic of the chart I think you chose well. Have someone near you give you a thumbs up and then go burn something (note: don't actually do the first part of the sentence).
(NOTE: I think my last note was mixed up, but I can't be expected to fix it)

Yeah, Mamimi is pretty evil, maybe more so than the dad out right. But I root for her the most, and she's still a pretty sympathetic character. Bah. I know about the new version of Eva but really I just wish they put that whole series to rest. It wasn't that spectacular to begin with--oh wait, my stop on the Hater Train just came up. Nighterz.

UrbanGuy In reply to Skaijo [2011-01-20 04:51:17 +0000 UTC]
I totally agree Mamimi is definitely sympathetic and despite some of the destruction she wrought, in the end I didn't hate her or dislike her. Ninamori, is the closest character to me disliking since she is a little underhanded in some of her actions.
As for Eva, after the platinum releases I didn't really see them beating that poor horse anymore. Eva was good when it came out IMO, but yeah, lets set it out to the pasture. (I think it might've been responsible for a lot of emo characters too!) Don't forget while you're on the hate train to stare at your hand!

What other anime do you like? To be honest, I haven't been watching much stuff from the East as good ol' fashion American are kicking so much ass right now. I can't get enough Adventure Time and with a proper sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender coming this year, life has overwhelmed me with a feeling of completeness.

To be honest you're probably better that way, since the recent stuff has been stylish visuals with no story to shameless moΓ©. If you haven't seen it by now I would recommend Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. It's always good for a laugh and I have yet to meet anyone who didn't like it. Some other notables are Excel Saga, Kino's Journey, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Azumanga Daioh. Of course anything from Studio Ghibli is pretty much a good choice. Also, I haven't really made an effort to pursue a lot of the new stuff, as it just doesn't seem too interesting at a glance.

Skaijo In reply to UrbanGuy [2011-01-23 15:55:31 +0000 UTC]
I respect Studio Ghibli, and you should really check out works that were directed by other people than Miyazaki. It's really cool when you see someone else take the Girl + Surreal Element + Splice of Life formula and do something in a very distinct direction. That's why I love The Cat Returns. If you haven't seen it (2005 movie) you should check it out even on veoh.com. Get the dubbed version, you don't want to miss out on the subtle animation that's highlighted by director.
I can't stand Haruhi Suzumiya as a person, so I couldn't get into the anime. Even characters with a metaphorical god-complex turn me off. I couldn't understand Excel Saga... I thought I would have liked fast-pace + random after watching FLCL and Hare Nochi Guu, but I don't think anyone really gets Excel Saga and only put up with it because it's Japanese. Azumanga Daioh is great, one of my favorites, but BOY has it aged in terms of character design. I look back at it now and almost cringe at the eye sizes. I'd like to check out Madhouse's new movie, Redline. But I can't find a link anywhere. :/

UrbanGuy In reply to Skaijo [2011-01-25 03:58:26 +0000 UTC]
I have not seen any of the non-Miyazaki, but I was intending on changing that. Now all the more reason to. I tend to prefer the dubs in Ghibli releases since Pixar does a bang up job.
Haruhi does have a strong personality and the whole god thing is a strange thing. I enjoyed Excel Saga, but it was a fresh breath of air at the time I had seen it although I had yet to be exposed to the splendor of FLCL (some of my friends actually told me it was bad, but good thing I didn't listen!). Redline, I have not heard of it, but I just checked out some stuff on it and it looks crazy. That might mean its great, hopefully.

Well... their teacher never struck me as lawful evil per se. Lawful stupid maybe, but not evil. I guess if I had to pick someone else I'd pick... Kitsurubami? Amaraou's sidekick? She's certainly an antagonist to naota, which leads her to the evil side, but she's mature and has methods. Or maybe make her lawful good and make Amaraou lawful evil. I mean you find out later that his whole reason for hunting Haruko is actually rather petty and childish revolving around the last time she was planet-side. At least Kitsurubami believes she's genuinely doing something to protect the world. The others choices I'm neutral about or support.

All good points. I couldn't find any outwardly evil/good lines from Kitsu though. Lawful stupid made me lol. Amongst the likes of Atomsk and Raharu, the evil side of the chart is so extremely stacked that someone like the teacher (or anyone else really) wouldn't seem like a worthy choice. I just liked the diagonal relationship between Mamimi, who is a true truant, Naota, who skips school on occasion, and finally the teacher. If you go along the other diagonal you get Amaro on one end, and his polar opposite rival in a sense, Haruko (with Naota in the middle as he leans from one side to another while mostly finding his own path at the end). Down the center you get the three forms of Naota, in a sense, and across you get the closest people in Naoto's life who aren't space aliens, or psychos. The chart's got a real nice balance to it.

There's a really sweet batman alignment out there that has similar relationships on verts and diagonals that inspired me to make this without just slapping characters into boxes. I originally wanted to make something with just Studio Ghibli characters, but I couldn't find any convincing out right evil characters. Mischievous sure. Evil nahh. Then I tried Mushishi, but no one's ever heard of that anime (biggest shame in the world, but probably best cause Mushishi doesn't need a Hype Train with a Hater Caboose). I tripped over FLCL as a final option and was happy that it turned out. 9 distinct characters in any show is a hard thing to find. That's why FLCL >>>>>> Eva imo. Eva characters are just extended parodies of stereotypes, whereas FLCL characters really hit the ground running as established personalities.

1. I love that batman alignment tree. Right up there with that demotivational poster about the green lantern batman.
2. I agree mushishi doesn't get as much attention as it deserves.
3. I was unaware that there were people who might actually believe eva to be better than FLCL. They're far more human than the eva folks.

I really don't understand the Eva hype. I guess it was slow-paced enough that you couldn't swallow the standard character fodder of a Gundam series ('cept 08th team, which was pure goodness), you could at least watch Eva and enjoy the plot too.

Looks like we've been connecting on all cylinders. How do you feel about Final Fantasy stand outs? Honestly, if you asked me what my favorite RPG is, I'd say Fallout 3, but if we're talking JRPG, I'd def give my hats off to FFXII. It's devisive, controversial, but most importantly--different. With a spectacular experienced VA cast and the best localization I've ever seen, each cutscene was a joy--and the gameplay was the most liberating thing I've seen yet. And who doesn't love Ivalice? The more Square fleshes out that world, the more I'm convinced they should just stay there.

chun64 In reply to Skaijo [2011-01-17 16:42:01 +0000 UTC]
As far as final fantasy goes, my top 3 would be 7, 9, and 12. 9 I like mostly for it's retro feel and awesome musical score, it's too bad the plot kinda flies off into left field halfway through. 7... I'll admit is mostly due to nostalgia, but it's pretty solid nonetheless. 12, on the other hand, has great music, fun, new gameplay mechanics, and amazing ambiance (I think they should explore Ivalice more too ). However, one of my biggest reasons for enjoying this game is that they shy away from the tired "love drama" elements and focus more on political strife. Not to mention the characters feel much more "adult" to me. Instead of some goofy cast of teens running around trying to save the world we get people who seem more real.

I always assumed the manga came out first when I watched it, seeing how they used the manga for an entire scene, but that could easily be something Gianax pulled for fun... that actually sounds more likely, now that I think about it...
