Thank you!  You have no idea HOW glad I am you did a WIP for this  Seeing how you did this stage by stage I think is really going to help me out a lot ^^  I didn't realize you did all that prep work before even doing the actual drawing!  I always figured they just started amazing ^u^  And I'm so sorry, I know I'm really bothering you with the questions lately, but I was hoping you could please help me with two things.  1) For shading, do you just use a gray-scale layer and overlay it on top of the color layer?  Or do you color in the shadows some other way?  And 2) I use Photoshop primarily, and it is HELL trying to get my line-work to look nice and smooth without heavy use of the pen tool, which I'm trying to not depend upon so much.  So do you think using something else like SAI would improve my freehand work?  Or does it just come down to good old-fashioned practicing?  Thanks!  I'll go now ^^

I personally don't like to use Photoshop for anything but effects, I found it horribly clunky when it came to actually doing digital drawings in it. Compared to SAI. And for shading I do not use the Greyscale layer as an overlay, I completely redo the shading by making a layer above the color layer and set the mode to Multiply then lowering the opacity to what I think looks right. The Greyscale only helps me get an idea on the final product, it has no use besides that. I find it helps me, but it's not a step you have to do.

I might need to make a new video tutorial sometime.

Thanks, I think I'll try out SAI.  I thought it was just me, but I really don't know how anyone can draw freehand in PS except for rough sketching.   I probably would do better in a program that has a smoothing option.  I also just bought Clip Studio Paint Pro, so we'll see how that works out.

And I definitely wouldn't complain if you made some more tutorial vids

Oh? I really like Clip Studio for its awesome special effects <3 But I still end up sketching in SAI. Might be a habit, though.

I made this image using Clip studio   Since it uses vectors to draw, it's really good at lining toon work.

Well I've been messing around with CSP for the past few days, and I am in LOVE with it!  Psh, and here I was beating myself up because I couldn't get my line-work to look decent in PS, when all I needed to do was switch programs XD  It's amazing what a difference it's made.  I did all but a few brush effects of the Dib & Cat pic you saw on Amino in CSP and so far I love the results I'm getting, though I still have a lot to experiment with.  I'm just happy that my lines look so much more controlled with the stabilizer option now.  And the vector thing is a huge plus, as well as those pose-able dolls.

This helped me allot when I first got Clip, also his custom free tools are amazing <3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=CODcl5…

I'm glad Clip has helped you fee more in control. I honestly don't understand how people use PS these days when there are better programs more suited for digital artist.

Thank you, I'll definitely check this guy out ^^

I honestly fell into that trap myself, thinking that Photoshop was the "best" just because it was the most well known... and the most expensive.  It's good for certain things, yeah, but doing freehand line art isn't one of them.  There is one nice thing--the hotkeys and a lot of the functions in Clip Studio are exactly the same as in PS, so I didn't have to re-learn much

And something else I've realized: As much as I love the ZIM style, drawing in my more natural style, or at least something non-ZIM, once in awhile is something of a confidence booster.  Just getting out of my comfort zone and seeing that "Yes, I CAN draw other stuff that's not in the IZ style!" is good to know, and it might be just what I need to climb a little bit further our of this funk

when you say you 'test the image in greyscale to see if it'll look okay', what are you testing for? What would make it not look okay? :0

It helps give you a better understanding on how the final product will end up looking. Like how it helped me see how horrible Dib's jacket will turn out if I leave it as is. I have actually seen allot of Japanese artist on Pixiv do this same technique, some even use color.

Oh! Huh, that's an interesting technique. Seems like quite a bit of extra effort though. Ever tried Ambient Occlusion? It seems like something you'd like to try out. (It's that super subtle type of shading that makes things look 3-D)

Skeleion In reply to Zerna [2017-01-22 11:07:45 +0000 UTC]

It's no any more effort than the sketch, the gray scale is just sloppily thrown in there. I searched Ambient Occlusion, it's a term mostly used by 3D renders. Do you have an example of how you would use it in 2D art?

Zerna In reply to Skeleion [2017-01-22 11:20:22 +0000 UTC]

That easy, huh? I should try that sometime, then...

and yes, it's mostly in regards to 3-D, but you can come pretty close in 2-D, too.

Indeed! Here are some examples/tutorials here on DA: <--this is a great one

and a REALLLLY beautiful example here, like wow:
