Description
Another new pair of viruses. From left to right:Love Letter - More commonly known as ILOVEYOU, this virus disguised itself as a plain text file named “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs”, as the .vbs extension was usually hidden by default on Windows computers of its time. The virus masqueraded as an email from a trusted loved one, fooling users into thinking it was safe to open. Once active, it would add Windows Registry data to start up automatically upon a reboot. It would hide or overwrite files with copies of itself, and propagate by sending itself along with the Barok worm via Outlook’s address book. Being programmed in Visual Basic made Love Letter a versatile virus, and many variations of the malware were identified during its spread.
Barok - Downloaded and sent by Love Letter each time it propagated itself, this worm renamed itself WIN-BUGSFIX.EXE to trick users into thinking it was helpful software. Once active, it would create a hidden window titled ‘BAROK’ and then get to work stealing passwords from infected computers.
