Description David, head shot in color. This is David's final look except his hair may be more brown when drawn later. I was trying a different coloring style. I took the advice from the critique on the sketch version of him. So I'd like to know what you guys think this time.

I own the character and the drawing. Please don't use without my permission.

I like it, the hair especially! My suggestion would be to draw one iris, and then copy and paste it to make sure they are perfectly identical. Also the refection on the eye should be a bit less blurred.

But you've made a lot of improvement very quickly ^__^

Agreeing with :Narrenzauber:, You've captured your character rather well in this rendition, the only thing I would want to comment on/add is that shadows are not always black. Especially when it comes to skin. Organisms are very colorful in side with veins, blood and arteries coursing through us. And thanks to our skin's semi translucent quality, these things tend to come out and give definition to the face. I guess my biggest areas of concern would be his nose and upper lip with the black highlights. Another color would definitely help things transition better and make the face more, face like (for lack of better words). The eyes don't even escape the colorful world that is our body as is the definition that comes from tearducts and veins around our eyes (although this might just tip your picture over into realism and I'm not sure that's where you want to be headed, just a suggestion though.) I do like your experiment with the pink highlights on brown though.

Thanks
In this one I was trying for less realism and more anime style but I can't color very well in anime style. I definitely need to experiment with skin tones more, do you have any ideas for helpful tutorials? With the nose and mouth I just put black in there because of the way I sketched it how could I have done it differently? I'm not a huge fan of the nose and mouth either, I fussed with it a good twenty minutes before moving on and didn't go back to change it. Right now I'm reading a book on how to draw anime style so I mixed the book's directions with my coloring style since they haven't mentioned coloring up to this point I have a feeling I'll need to purchase a separate book for coloring.

Np.

Even if it's not styled realistic, a realistic or more neutral toned palette maybe just what you're looking for. For references, literally just look at your own skin tones and that of others. Although I should mention that almost any pallete can be used together it's just a matter of how well the color's sit together.

I don't think you will be requiring another book. There are hundreds of tutorials dealing with colors and pallete's floating around DA [link] it's really just a matter of what colors suite you. Although some tutorials dealing with the basics in dealing with shadows and color theory, that I would recommend are: [link] for shadows and something to put color theory in a nut shell, [link] Whatever you end up doing, my only suggestion is to try something other than black. Good luck and keep drawing!

Nice portrait. He looks like he has a lot of self esteem, but isn't a macho. So, he looks likeable. But you might look into skin colours. In skin there can be a lot of different colours, like red, blue, brown, green, yellow or pink or sometimes even grey.

I definitely need help with skin tones. Do you know of any helpful tutorials? I've been venturing out as far as coloring styles especially compared to how I usually color

I don't know if tutorials can help you. I don't work with tutorials, but with photos and real people and also with myself. I just observe things and try them out. You could also take a look at some general rules about lights and shadows. There are some, like for example the sky will always be reflected on water and that's why it looks blue. Just a simple example.
