      Verdigris had been hanging out alone at home with April and the egg, which gave him quite a bit of time to think. And of course, when you're along with your thoughts and the precious little lives that somehow the world decided you were ready to be in charge of, your thoughts go to not so nice places.

    He'd happened to be visiting when Farren came in, arm twisted to hell and a long gash on his face. It was through stories and word of mouth where he'd learned that the culprit was a particularly nasty childhood bully of his who's apparently taken it a bit too far.

    Then there was Alec. He didn't think it was possible for Traumer to raise a thief, but then again, there were so many kids that it probably slipped under the radar. And to think that the hermit was so dense, or perhaps just malicious, to steal an actual breathing child? It was enough to make sure that April didn't leave his sight whenever they were over.

    Then Maw. He remembered playing with the little fuzzball when he was a baby, and now he was running around rampant after trying to choke out Traumer? For the horrible disgusting crime of 'not giving him to the nook'? Who knew what he would do if he ever came back.

    Verdigris clutched the egg tighter. He hated to say it so soon after he'd claimed he was comfortable with his family again, but he was scared for his egg. April too of course, but April could fight. April could run. If he told April to stay by his side or get away from a certain person, she would listen. But his egg was a different story entirely. What if Alec stole it? What if Maw smashed it? What if he met this childhood bully on the streets and they harmed it?

    The thoughts raced through his brain, beginning one of many sleepless nights...
