Lo and behold it is not a VW but a Porch ( Porsche 356 ).Same lineage and believe it or not, certain mechanical components including the engine case and some suspension components were based on and initially sourced from Volkswagen.
The 356's had a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car utilising unitized pan and body construction. Just like the bugs.

It took a good while to get back to some form of normality. Lost my Dad last year and it still is a rough road.
