This OC was inspired by a My Style Your Style Challenge by KATEtheDeath1 and her OC Zircon. I liked the idea of an animal hoodie and wing mashup. This OC was challenging. The body language and hands were difficult to capture because, practice.
Although this OC is inspired by KATEtheDeath1's Zircon I made some decisions on pallet....I chose pale skin as opposed to ivory white and blue hair instead of magenta. In addition based on how the composition evolved, I had to flip the canvas as the western eye typically reads images from left to right.
Zircon is a demon who is estimated to be around 2,700 years old. Not much is known about his origins, probably because of his age...perhaps no one really remembers. But he dislikes humans, something I can relate to, lol. He is also known to be mischievous and at times argumentative, which may be one of the reasons why he looks like he's been in a scuffle.
Wacom Cintique 32HD. This work took 30+ hours, not including the fails, of which there are numerous discarded skrawlls somewhere in my study...

The wings look really awesome as well as the sweater, the scars and everything else, I'm happy that Zircon helped inspire you to create this.

Thank you for the compliment and feedback. I am happy that I could do his character and your OC Zircon justice. I understand that our drawing styles are quite different. I altered the pallet and composition a little, because sometimes when a digital creation starts, it begins to speak, (not literally, lol I wish it did though) and the way in which the painting develops over time, influences the final outcome.
I just wanted to thank you again in allowing me to make some minor adjustment to the pallet. Keep creating and, inspire others along the way ^-^

Thanks, I want to make the wings less stylized. I like the feathers for the wings that you created in the work called Grounded. Do you use visual reference for creating soft looking feathers?

I do! I have some bird taxidermy mounts I use often to reference my wings, along with some specific birds based on the structure of their wings to make sure I'm getting the right structure per what the character can do (i.e. elliptical, soaring, etc type of wings).

I think to continue to develop as an artist it's necessary to have the capacity to accurately illustrate form and texture. The latter, I found to be a little more challenging. Do you use specific brushes too? The scales on the MerMay for example...

Sometimes, yes. I've got a big library of brushes I've collected or made. The scales, for example, are a mix between a brush and then just hand detailing. I find most brushes don't really develop desired results on their own and require some hand-tuning. The scales brushes seemed fairly convincing with some massaging.

The MerMay is one example of some nice application of texture. How many hours do you typically spend on sketching or digital painting in a week?

Haha I haven't a clue! I don't usually time myself for total works or individual works. The only times I end up timing myself is if I'm filming time lapse videos... Because then I end up with an accurate time video at the end.
