"The Aspirant climbed up the rough, stone-hewn stairs inside the Cavern of the Dragon God, the air sulfuric and hot from the vents lining the steps. Tired and weak from the Trials beforehand, nonetheless the Aspirant kept his back straight as he approached the High Altar. Overhead among the stalactites, young Dragonlings swooped around languidly as the lone human reached the dais and knelt before the altar. The Offering has arrived.

The High Altar burned with eternal flames, their flickering lights dancing across the statue of the Dragon God. The lights and shadows seems to give life to the granite statue, the eyes pulsing with internal fire. Various Dragonlings, the Messengers of the Dragon God, flocked behind the statue like spectators in a coliseum. The Aspirant knelt and offered himself to the Dragon God, praying that he is judged worthy.

For a long moment, there was no sound except the crackling of the flames and the slight chattering between the Dragonlings. Even so, the Aspirant kept his arm outstretched and his head bowed. Many Aspirants had come and eventually left, the Dragon God showing no interest in those unworthy. Those that somehow displeased the Dragon God were attacked and consumed by the Dragonlings. Before the flames of the High Altar, the heat began to suffocate the Aspirant, yet he did not dare to move.

Finally, one of the Dragonlings swooped down and circled around the Aspirant. It's tail dipped into the flames of the altar, the magical flames flared and grew to a flaming comet. The Aspirant, both expectant and afraid, stood up as the Dragonling circled closer and closer. The judgement cometh."

Artist's Note:

A very busy piece, with most of the story bits above cooked up by me.

In the paneling layout, I'm trying to make the Dragon God statue center-stage, with the left and right panels forming a "V" along the upper parts.

Could have done more shading to set the mood, but my skill on that ain't up to it.
