Ian is a mixed traffic engine that was built in 1936 by William Stainer in Crewe Works. He has many siblings, most of which are unknown.

He was built in the late 1930s spefically in 1936. After he was built and tested, he was assigned to the LMS railway where he worked as a mixed traffic engine.Β 

When the grouping of British Railways came around, he was reassigned to the Eastern Region where he became a passener engine. In theΒ mid-1960s, British Railways was not interested in having steam engines on the British network system, so he was withdrawn in 1961. While his siblings were withdrawn and scrapped between 1963-1966

In 1969, he was sentenced to scrap, but Sir Topham Hatt, controller of the North Western Railway brought him to work on the railway. Nowadays, he works on the Brendam Branch with Edward & BoCo
