This is just a really basic guide, but I hope it helps somewhat. It was drawn pretty quickly, so the step-by-steps don't look that fantastic. But I hope the message is still there, lol.

It's a pretty simple way of how I shade my orcas. I've only used a few layers here, which shows how simple and basic it is. Sometimes I can use up to 50 layers on just one whale. The amount of layers used doesn't necessarily mean how detailed it will be; I know a few people who only use one or 2 layers and still get fantastic results. For me, it's more like my security. If I stick everything on new layers, and I mess something up, I can simply delete that layer without ruining the entire image.

It's my first tutorial, so I hope it is understandable.

Done in photoshop 7.

Edit: I no longer paint like this and have since grown with my painting technique. Though I still hope this is helpful to other people.

What drawing program is this? And does it cost?

This was done in Photoshop and yes it does cost money. I got mine really cheap off someone who was a Uni Professor. Students and school-related people get discounts to buy photoshop.

There is another program which is free, called The Gimp. As far as I know, it's pretty much the same as photoshop, with the ability to use layers and stuff. I've never used that program but I know other people love it.

Do you use a graphics tablet like one of the Wacoms? If you do, is it better to use one that has a built-in screen?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SkyebobPiepants In reply to 0rcinusorca [2012-07-11 02:33:22 +0000 UTC]

I do use Wacom tablets. I have 2 of them. One is a Wacom Intuos 3, and the other is a 'cheaper' wacom Bamboo. I pretty much use my little Bamboo exclusively now. Neither have a built in screen and I've never used one with a screen.

I think a screen would be pretty neat. I don't know if it would be laggy or anything, but if it worked perfectly I would guess it would be better and easier to use. But with other tablets, it just becomes second nature to draw on the tablet while looking at the computer monitor. So I guess it would just be what you get used to. All tablets have a learning curve.
