SkyfireDragon β€” Phantom shortsword from my collection

Description A short-sword I purchased because I liked the shape and balance. It would not make a very good weapon due to the stainless steel blade not being able to hold a edge under combat conditions.

Do you know what your sword is a copy of? Jody Samson's Doombringer sword. The late great swordsmith who made the Conan movie swords.Β

I googled doombringer sword and all I could find was one video link for the Phantom Sword,Β  www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aUzdv…
; all the other examples look very different from the Phantom Sword. I have not been able to find out any information on this sword before now, you have given me a new starting point for a more in-depth search. Thank you!Β

I found out why you could not find it. The original sword was sold after Jody Samson died and the image was taken down from his site's gallery. You cannot find the image anywhere. However I being a sword and knife buff remembered that I have the image saved on my other laptop and I uploaded it to DeviantArt. Click on my profile and check my Deviations. That is the original sword that the Phantom Sword is a copy of. The Jody Samson DoomBringer. I hope you like it and appreciate my effort hehe!Β

Thank you! Now I have a better idea of what it was.
Even as a knock-off, the design of it gives it a great balance; better then other cheapΒ swords I have purchased.
At some future point I may make a similar sword with a steel blade (not stainless).Β

I think I will copy the pattern and make one out of carbon or alloy steel. Shape and balance make it feel live in the hand.

This one has a cheap non-tempered stainless steel blade. A correctly tempered carbon steel blade would bite right into the milled, non-tempered edge of this low priced production swords. The edge on a cheap, non-tempered stainless blade will blunt on a hard surface. A correctly tempered carbon steel blade will hold an edge far longer. The standard cheap stainless blade will bend and stay deformed. A correctly tempered carbon steel blade will bend and then come back to true. Some stainless alloys can be tempered, but it has to be the correct alloy. Tempering/heat treating adds cost to production, so for the cheaper blades it is omitted. As I said, I liked the sword for the shape and balance. In the future I plan to make a sword based on this pattern, but out of a more combat worthy steel.Β

its kinda stupid really, I"ve seen some people selling "High quality steel" katanas that are just stainless steel, and charge the price one would expect if the katanas were forged properly in the old times

People with more money then sense. Of course most people have never handled a true sword, or know how to use one without being a danger to them selves or others.

Katana is a dangerous sword, one wrong swing or a simple deflect and you can sever an entire appendage if it's made properly. only a handfull of people know how to use one and I'm tired of people who think they can just use one like any other sword

Traditionally, you do not practice with a live sword until you have been a year or more in the Japanese style. You have pointed out the dangers to the untrained. I have had a little instruction in Ken do, but the Navy's schedule put a stop to my instruction. Lately I have studied in the Chinese styles with dao (saber) forms. Even a wooden practice sword can do damage if you are not careful. I have a fascination for two handed sabers like the Japanese Nodachi or Nagamaki, Chinese Maio Dao, German Krigsmesser, or the two-handed Swiss Saber. I hope to add examples to my collection and work on forms to use them.

I need more money!Β  Cold Steel has a Nodachi for around $750, although the proportions are closer to a Nagamaki. Albion Swords has a Krigsmesser for around $1200. Β  I already have a practice Maio Dao from WLE. I may have to just forge and grind out the blades and then send them off to a commercial heat treat facility. Then I would finish and assemble the swords.

I have some Ford and dump truck leaf spring plates around somewhere, I might try with them. 5160 spring steel.
