Description
A new year's goal for me was to do more Original work, not based off any of my own characters, just stand-alone pieces that showcase my ability and can be displayed on their own. In this case, a woman made of glass.---

Very interesting! While I liked watching the speedpaint---the details were incredible---I couldn't quite catch which blending modes you used nearer to the end.

I overlayed the layer with the wallpaper onto the layer with my painted figure, then I used a smudge tool to drag and warp the pattern on her so it would look as if it was being distorted through her.
I'm sorry if I edited it too fast, I'll keep that in mind and slow it down next time.

this is very impressive, doing a glass surface and the light passing through it!

If you ever want or need any advice about putting together a portfolio I'd be happy to share what I've been taught. c:
This is a really fun piece, but honestly I'm not sure what abilities this is supposed to showcase.
I love the reflections for this piece, how the glass is casting refracted light onto the walls and how you can see the pattern of the background through her skin. As it were though, she feels more like she's madeof water than glass. I noticed looking closer that a lot of your brushstrokes look like they're giving the illusion of movement because of how soft and unfocused they are. I looked up some pictures of glass figurines just for an idea of how the highlights/shadows would work and generally glass has very hard shadows and reflections.
Some pictures I found;

I think experimenting with different substances, such as glass, and how to colour/shade them is a great idea. If you intend to do more studies like this I'd suggest making them a bit more interesting, your glass woman is beatiful but she's very neutral looking and the background is very soft and demure. What about this piece is going to grab your audiences' attention?
Keep up the great work! I'm so impressed with the progress you're making and I can't wait to see what you'll do next! <3

Those references are amazing! I'm actually considering redoing this or doing another painting separately since these refs are much better than what I had to work with. Having a real eye catcher in my work is something I need to study up on, I have a general idea of how to guide the eye across the canvas and use colors, but making a piece striking is hard for me. I do agree that this piece might be confusing for a portfolio. I thought that doing a portrait, but a portrait of a subject made in a weird substance would show my ability to render, use values, and portray facial anatomy as well as convey different substances.
But I realize the best portfolio pieces are focused ones, without a bunch of stuff going on. Some suggestions would be awesome.

Something to keep in mind when compiling a portfolio is what the purpose of the portfolio is; if you're putting together a portfolio for class review then put in a wide variety of pieces you feel best reflect you and your abilities as an artist. I know you want to be an art teacher so an art portfolio that shows your understanding of colours/values, lighting, anatomy/proportions, perspective, etc. would certainly be best.
I was taught to keep my portfolio between 8-12 pieces, no more and no less. Too little doesn't show enough and too much is overwhelming. Make sure your style is consistent unless you intend to show how well you can mimic other art styles. In your case I feel examples of your realism and cartoons are fine since they are both your style of artwork just different techniques.
Make sure the pieces are interesting, and showcase the kind of work you enjoy/want to be doing. c:

Thing is the work I'd most enjoy making is digital, and the atmosphere to that is mostly negative. But We'll see as time goes on, maybe people will warm up to it.

There is nothing wrong with either of those things! If any of your favourite artists have an art station profile I'd take a look at that as that website is more of a professional portfolio site than DA is. See how other professionals are displaying their work.

I have actually wanted to make an art station account, thing is those require a linkedIN account, AND a real name.

If you want to wait till you have a degree under your belt to call yourself a professional that's perfectly understandable. I do think you're selling yourself short though. =3=
