Description
Another large one! Might want to hit the download button for a crisp image. :]Christmas gift art for *p0rcelainbombshelL of her awesome Syvraei! Syv has totally come a long way, and she is a gorgeous character through and through.
I hope you had an absolutely awesome Christmas, Kara. I know you've befallen some unfortunate events but you've shrugged it off as though nothing's happened. I sincerely hope the new year will be an awesome one! You're an amazing friend and I never really told you how much I appreciated your company and always being there for me, especially during our years at FSU! Crazy school was crazy!
I'm so glad I met you, everyone needs a Kara in their life.
My power decided it wanted to flicker so I had to go back and redo some things, thus why I'm posting so darn late! Gah!
-------
Update 12/28 -- Taking a break for the night, my shoulder is absolutely shot. Check back tomorrow for a new piece, maybe even two pieces!
I'll be posting one piece of gift art each day for the next few days up to the 1st of January, aka NEW YEAR! I still have a few to finish up, so posting times may be irregular. It feels good to properly ink again!
Tools Used (from start to finish):
Photoshop CS, Wacom Intuos 3

What a unusual, original character that still looks realistic and actually like it could exist.
And those hands! Those hands!...

Why make a tutorial when there's a whole slew of anatomy references for people to look up on the web?

D: because 1) I am lazy, and 2) they tend to either be incorrect, too focused on the physicality of the subject and not its artistic sense, or way too simplified

Artistic sense? But that's not the point to a good anatomy reference -- it's job is to convey correct proportions and structures, not style.
These are too simple?

My big beef with artists making tutorials on anatomy, on DA at least, is that most of the time they have no idea what they're actually talking about. So I'm not about to convey to the world that I'm actually an expert on the subject when I'm not.

Those diagrams are as good as it gets when you want to get down to the nitty gritty details of something, but for me at least they aren't the best starting point. They are so very complex, and it can be overwhelming at times. I know if you really want to understand anatomy you will have to refer to them eventually, but personally I'd like to start with a different approach. Also those ones in particular usually don't go on to mention how the muscles and bones move (past basics, anyway) and don't discuss the overall flow of the muscle groups and ect. That's what I meant by artistic sense.
Also I was throwing the simple and incorrect ones into the same category- that is, people who don't know what they are talking about XD
And lol I don't think it would be arrogant at all if you were to make a tutorial offering advice and discussing your observations- that's what they all are, and your knowledge of anatomy is developed enough that lots of people would benefit from it. Sure you might not technically be an expert, but hey, look at all the teachers out there who actually don't know what they're doing XDD

Strange. I expected to see a lot more high-detail lineart, but here the color is making the rules, save for the hands. I don't exactly agree with the back leg length, or the neck thickness, but that's probably due to the fact it's running in a direction I can see very well. Wonderful work still.

Skysealer In reply to Frogore [2010-12-29 08:33:06 +0000 UTC]
Keep in mind that there is perspective in play here with the furthest hind leg, it is very far removed from the viewer and will definitely appear smaller. The neck is supposed to be thick at the cranium's base, it's in her ref and I like to stay true to the original artist's creation.
She's a very slick skinned character and doesn't need extraneous amounts of line art.

Really really interesting concept, that. As for extraneous amounts of lineart, it has it's "Spots"
Me? I tend to keep it sort of simple.

Skysealer In reply to Frogore [2010-12-29 09:04:59 +0000 UTC]
Well when you think about it, sometimes certain parts of the body will have different textures, as evident on Syv here. A pigeon is a prime example of this, smooth surface over most of the plumage, but the legs are rough by comparison due to the shift in skin and dermic structures. Mostly a poor example of what I'm trying to get across since Syv is relatively smooth overall, but her feet see a lot of wear, thus I exemplified it by giving it more nitty-gritty shade work.
Most of the line work can't even be seen due to the dark blue coloration, too.

Froggy ain't the best at lineart, but I've done enough of it to see with pretty good detail. However your coloring prowess is a league above mine ^^'

I love:
-the way you drew her dynamic pose.
-the fact that you included two of her other tongues.
-the way you did the cel shading on her body (it looks very professional).
-her feetsies!
-the way you handled her coloration. It looks fucking spectacular.
-her neck!
-the fact that you even took the time to draw her. I REALLY appreciate that, and it means a helluva lot to me.

We must make plans to hang out sometime soon. =3

love it. gonna fave it.
may i ask why her belly is so big?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Skysealer In reply to griffindragon [2010-12-28 22:19:59 +0000 UTC]
If you notice on animals that are sprinters or heavy runners, the chest cavity is usually enlarged for increased lung capacity as well as muscular enlargement in key areas. Her body isn't as long as a cheetah or a greyhound in proportion, so the belly might seem a bit 'big' in regards to the otherwise streamlined animals I mentioned.
