Description PART 2: [link]

TADA! – my first ever attempt at drama.

(Please note that this is just the first part of the prologue so there is no conclusion yet.)

This project is a tribute to the intriguing universe of Mass Effect, that I feel head over heels in love with about six months ago. But first and foremost it’s a tribute to my new darling alien race, the turians.

Also please note that this story is set in alternateverse format; while it begins at the start of Mass Effect, events play out a bit differently. I’ve tried keeping characters true to themeselves, personality-wise, and have added a few of my own along the way.

Anyway, I hope this will be enjoyable to some small degree at last. Thank you for reading.

Mass Effect and its characters belong to BioWare.

Ha ha, well I don't really advertise for my stuff so it's easy to miss it.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I spent two months doodling turians before I got to this stage. And they still look like this.

Well, it's taken me forever but I've finally started reading!

Your frames are all very nicely composed and for a first time drawing the turians, I'm very impressed (I find them excruciatingly difficult to draw at the best of times).

I like Meril's coloration in particular - very striking.

Yay.

Thank you. It was different starting this project up, much so compared to the short Halo X parodic comics I did before this. I'm glad if the format is readable.

Lol, I spent about two months doodling turians before even daring go ahead with the first few pages. Like I wrote on XBL, I think the first twenty or so pages look like crap. It wasn't until the end of this chapter that I started feeling somewhat confident around turians and their expressions and body-language. I hope to keep improving even more with future chapters.

Thank you.

Well first of all I really enjoy your style of drawing. The ships, the Citadel, the Presidium and characters are really well drawn - though the Council Tower looks like it's a little too small. And I have a few question to ask.

1. Turgin? I knew the Asari councilor was named Tevos but Turgin? Is it a canon name or did you make it up?
2. And this ties to my second question. In the games Turian councilor was black, did you replace the character completely with a new one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Tajtusek [2011-10-27 10:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks a lot for all your comments, even the critic ones. I'll try replying to them all shortly.

As for these two questions: yes, this in not the in-game Councilor but an evil character I made up myself. A few readers got confused and I'm sorry, I should have made it clearer that this is the case.

A for co-writing as you mentioned in a later comment ... it's been suggested that I'd work with other people. But then it wouldn't really be my thing if you know what I mean. I'm a bit stubborn in that regard. I'd like to be the author and 'artist' behind my projects to 100% and hopefully with time I'll learn how to write and draw better.

Also, I'm totally new to this, never really written a serious piece before, nor drama or detective works, hence all the inherent flaws obviously.

Tajtusek In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-10-28 03:28:41 +0000 UTC]

Well I was a co-writer in several comics the newest one being 's Citadel Wards so I know how it goes. And I can tell you that the statement of having a co-writer would make the story less yours is false. It would be true if that person wrote everything and you just drew her script, but if you keep the position of the lead writer to yourself you can reject every idea you don't like that came from the co-writer and use him more as a support to keep the plot air tight, or to give you a fresh perspective etc. But I'm not forcing you to do anything just wanted to clear this issue, because in my opinion it's false conviction many cartoonists have. I really hope that drawing this comic will help you improve but from my experience it's really rare for a cartoonist to write really well, and for a writer to draw anything more than stick figures - those two skills just don't seem to come together - but I hope you are one of those people who given time can do both things very well.

And about the comments - because I'm going to stay around for more of your comic pages be prepared for more comments from me, critic ones as well.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Tajtusek [2011-10-29 09:59:38 +0000 UTC]

Aww, well Padzi seems to be a very productive artist from what I've been able to tell here on DA.

Oh, I know, it's just a suspicion I have since I've never co-written anything. I started reading a new book the other night, and the first thing I saw when I opened it were all these acknowledgments to people having helped the author in this way or that. It just seems .. a bit bothersome getting so many people involved? Maybe that's how it works being a professional writer. The good thing is, I have no intetion of ever being a professional writer nor artist. I like fumbling around in the dark on my own.

It's interesting though because every single idea I have come to me in the form of images. Then, finding text to explain what's happening in those images is the tricky part. Maybe it's the same way for other cartoonists as well? Anyway, you'll get a heck of a lot to read in the final seven pages of my first chapter, that explains the whole idea behind the story. I wonder what you'll make of it all?

Sounds good to me.

Oh I see. Well I think you will find Garrus a bit different in the first game then, he always seemed so much younger and .. I don't know, lively. I was shocked when I stumbled into him in the second game because he had changed so much in the two years Shepard was dead.

So, are you playing as male or female Shepard? I only use male for Renegade playthroughs myself.

Thrasher-B312 In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-07-31 02:21:54 +0000 UTC]

I play both games as a male infiltrator, choosing the Paragon path. Oh, and I totally agree with you, Garrus definitely matured/aged between the two games. In ME1, he seems a bit... internally conflicted, possibly angry, and a bit brash in his decisions and way of thinking. In ME2, he comes off as a bit wiser, a bit more serious, but still like he is conflicted with himself But I guess that in the final Female Shepard romance scene, that is explained... "I just want ONE THING, just this once, to go right..."

Having played through the second one first, I am finding a bit difficult to get the right... feel for ME1, the two games are so very different... but nevertheless, I am definitely enjoying it!

But still, I think we can both agree that Garrus' personality in both games is mainly due to how he has been hurt, betrayed, etc. WAY too much. And the whole "I make a bad Turian" thing just made me almost want to cry in ME2. He reminds me of me, he feels like he is isolated from the rest of his species, like a black sheep, in the way that I often feel isolated from the rest of the people around the area in which I live, and I guess that helps me relate to him a bit more.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Thrasher-B312 [2011-08-03 16:54:35 +0000 UTC]

Gaaaah, then you didn't romance Garrus at all? You MUST try that sometime, please, it's so fun and hilarious and sweet and awkward all at the same time.

Indeed. It's like he aged ten-fifteen years between the two games ... and I think he's just very frustrated about many things in the first game. His work, his failings as an officer and a son, his ambitions etc etc.

Oh right, so you have romanced him, he he. I just don't know how to interpret this romance at all. Is it just a one night stand or is there more to it than that? Most fans seem to think they will basically live happily ever after. I'm not so sure. As much as I'd love for them to do so, I would also like for Garrus to find peace with the rest of his life, find a career he's enjoying and make peace with his family and be accepted for what he is.

The games are totally different. I will always love the first game more simply because of all the customization and the villain. Saren was a great addition to the game. The second game's plot felt rather meh to me, it wasn't that interesting. I just hope we'll get a great plot in the final game to send it all off with a bang.

Awww, I know ... Garrus is a great character, he's just one of those guys who needs serious rescuing, don't you think? And just like you, I can sympathize so very well with him just like you say. I've always been sort of the black sheep in the family and an outcast of society as well.

Thrasher-B312 In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-08-03 17:33:02 +0000 UTC]

I've seen his romance (every scene) but I've never actually tried it before, considering the fact that I've never tried playing a FemShep, but with Trinity from Mass Effect as the voice actor (Jennifer Hale) I'm going to have to try it sometime.

It really makes me sad to hear Garrus say that he feels like a failure an all, he just has a different opinion on things, I hope that in ME3 he finally ends up realizing that...

True, true. And about my above comment, no I haven't romanced him, but it's just so sweet what happens in it, y'know? I really wish a larger amount of time would pass between ME2 and ME3 (as it is now, only a few months) so that we could see if anyone progressed forward in their lives or something like that. That is just what he needs, someone to hold on to for more than just one session. Someone that could accept him, and understand his plight.

Hmm, I fell in love with BOTH storylines, but I just didn't end up enjoying the actual gameplay of the first one so much, mainly the combat. I still love it though, ME's one AND two are just EPIC to me.

Yeah, I totally understand how you feel, being the "loner" in my area has definitely had it's effect on my during my childhood. All the rejection I went through really changed my personality, and it really left me as one of the world's biggest introverts, but I'm not complaining. I really share that attitude with Garrus, and another way in which I can relate to him is his "Question the Authority" trait. His feel on getting it done no matter what it takes and his constant clashing with those in positions of authority (Executor Pallin) is something I really understand, being against the idea of some people believing that they are better than others and all... but yeah, there are so many things about Garrus that make him so awesome!

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Thrasher-B312 [2011-08-04 20:58:37 +0000 UTC]

I hope you do. I was like GRRRRR why can't you romance GARRUS when I played the first game, ha ha. I went for Liara to get the achievement in the end, it was a pretty awkward and funny romance too but I wouldn't want to spend the rest of eternity with her. There's only one guy for that purpose.

Indeed, I get the feeling he's rebelling about a lot of old-fashioned ideals etc in turian culture and society. Maybe he's been influenced by humanity even before Shepard and that's part of why he thinks so differently?

Yes that would have been nice. Maybe they'll make a novel of what happens after the game or something? Assuming there is an after and anyone survives! Garrus definitely needs Shepard or someone he can trust equally much. I just hope they won't kill him, that would be too horrible. Shepard already died, so ... killing him/her would be old news somehow. I think my worst case scenario would be if Shepard has to physically bond with a Reaper. Ugh! I got stuck on that idea since I remembered an old movie, Star Trek the motion picture. Have you seen it? It basically is about a space probe, one of the Voyager probes, that landed on a planet inhibited by living machines and was sent back through space with a new purpose: to find, and unite with, its creators. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the true purpose of the Reapers too. Not that humanity created them, unless Protheans were humans ... argh.

Most people seem to like the second game better, I guess I'm the exception to the rule.

As for me, I've always been alone even since I was a little kid. So I started developing my fantasy, or maybe I was born with it? I started drawing and modelling with clay when I was a few years old and wrote my first fanfiction when I was about seven years old, lol. So I've always kept myself busy in my own company. One of our greatest authors, Selma Lagerlöf, was lame in one leg and because of that, whether she was in pain or simply embarassed, developed her remarkable talent for writing. I always thought of myself a little like that; if I had been normal and had been accepted into society, I probably would have been just another nobody that adopted likes and ideas like everyone else. Now instead I'm me, a very unique and special person. I certainly will never be another Selma Lagerlöf of course .. but I'm quite happy with myself.

True, in my ME1 playthrough as a male Shepard (I don't know why, but I ALWAYS seem to model my ingame characters after myself as much as possible... huh) I romanced Liara T'Soni aswell. But it is possible to romance Liara as a femShep right? I mean, with the way Asari work and all...

Y'know, he reminds me of my Sangheili OC, Naga, in that aspect. Naga has major disagreements with most forms of older Sangheili culture. Well, that's how he was BEFORE the amnesia thing in Halo: Reborn. He'll go "back to normal" once his memory is recovered though, and of course the character isn't simply built upon JUST being against most older Sangheili ideals, he is MUCH deeper than that...

About the Star Trek thing, I've never ended up getting into that particular universe. However, it DOES sound... interesting, I'll give it that much. About Garrus, I agree, but what I'm REALLY interested in is his past. Other than the Shadow Broker Dossiers and the brief mentionings Garrus makes of his father, we don't know much at all about Garrus' past life before the mission against Saren. I'd really like to see more about that aswell...

I think that one of the main things about the second one that draws me in so much is the combat, and the... the TONE of the plotline in general. It just feels, I dunno, I can't describe it, lol.

As a child, I always had different interests, different personality traits, etc. So that kinda led to me being away from the crowd and all. Oh, and you wrote your first fanfic at age SEVEN?! Heh, my first fanfic IS Halo: Reborn, which I just started last year... and I agree with you about the whole normalness thing. It's good to just be you, not just part of the crowd simply for conformity. I think my being apart from the status quo is one the things about myself that I like.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Thrasher-B312 [2011-08-05 10:41:57 +0000 UTC]

So, I take it you're a male person in real life then? I'm not and I usually don't really like playing as female characters, but there's something special about shepard. For one thing, I don't like the male voice actor one bit. He sounds too cocky somehow, but that makes him ideal for Renegades, he he. And fem Shepard is the epitomy of female beauty to me, so the choice is easy.

And yes, it's very possible to romance Liara as a female. After all, theirs is a genderless species. I believe that if two asari mate to produce an offspring one of them even calls themselves 'father'. I could be wrong though, might be something I picked up from fanfics.

So, do you have a FFnet account for me to check out? I'd like to read more about your Naga character sometime.

Yes, you could watch the movie alone if you like, without prior knowledge of the universe. It's really an amazing movie, I was so awed when I first watched it, basically because I've been a Transformers fan for about fifteen years, on and off, and a planet with living machines sounded interesting to say the least.

Of course, who isn't interested in Garrus' past! I'd love to know every little detail of it, including every bust he ever made during his C-SEC career. More importantly, I want to get to know his family and his infamous father too.

It's funny, since I'm almost exclusively an FPS person myself, I really should like the second game better than the first ... ah well, there's something for everyone in these games, that's for sure. But lol, that human Reaper larva was like the anti-climax of the century for me, lol. I was like ... what the FUCK is that .. a giant Terminator knock-off! Awww, ugh, can you imagine how silly that thing would have looked floating through space??? I mean, the squid Reapers are just perfect. Nude giant metallic humans?? No way!

Yes I did, complete with own illustrations too! He he, I think I still have some of them somewhere in cold storage. Imagine, back then personal computers hardly even existed. Uh, I'm ancient ...

See, that's the spirit. I've always found the odd, often somewhat bohemian, people so much more interesting than the mainstream people. Probably why I'm so fascinated with aliens in the first place.

Yes I am, and I knew you were female aswell, but I do understand where you are going with the whole Shepard's voice thing. In my opinion, Male Shepard is completely and utterly no-nonsense, but no big-e. I would enjoy playing as Trinity from The Matrix in Mass Effect though... hehe...

I thought so, awesome. Yes, it does make perfect sense. After all, how would they have managed to reproduce for bazillions of years BEFORE a first contact?

Actually no, not yet. But I DO have most of my currently written chapters of Halo: Reborn on my dA profile though.

You describe yourself as "ancient?" I'm not going to ask your age, as I'm not someone to ask people personal questions through the internet, but whenever I state my age to people, they are like HOLYSHITWAAAAAA UR 2 MATURE TO BE THAT LSAJDLAGH;LDSGLH!!! Lolzorz.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Thrasher-B312 [2011-08-20 20:51:11 +0000 UTC]

That's a good description I guess. I just feel the voice actor isn't really putting that much effort into the character, his voice is quite monotone at least to me.

Lol, somehow when I think of asari to asari matings, I can't help thinking of earthworms. You know, the dual-sex thing.

Oh cool, I'll definitely add them to the pile of fanfiction I'm reading currently.

Ha ha, well I'll be 39 in a couple of months so that is rather ancient, isn't it? I mean, for doing this kind of thing anyway and fooling around on Xbox Live. I should be someone's aunt or grandmother even.

Ah well, then I see you and I share the same uniqueness in that we're not as old on the inside as we are on the outside?

Thnx! It's also featured in multiple groups like Sangheili Zone!

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that journal you posted on your last birthday. But age doesn't matter, character/personality does! As someone once said, you can never be too old to play.

Well, being an adolescent, I guess you could say it is more like I am older on the inside than I am on the outside. I tell someone my age and they are totally shocked at the fact that they are talking to a non-immature 14 yr. old.

Lol, yes, I was thinking of the hermaphrodite connection there.

He he, thanks. I never honestly expected to ever own a game console .. and now I have three.

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant the other way around, that you're actually a lot older than you are. But of course, some people mature sooner than others, I guess some are born with wiser genes than others. Congratulations.
