Description ...
I made the original sketch for this one waaay back in 2002, if I'm not mistaken. The pic was supposed to be a birthday present for a friend of mine, but it somehow remained buried under all those other sketches until last month. Took me quite some time to finish it, but I'm quite pleased with the result. And I got a chance to experiment a bit.
...
Bugs that I know of:
1. The gal's breasts are kinda misplaced Couldn't do anything about it, because the "collar-thing" was in the way. And I already inked it back in 2002, so... *sigh*
2. The water sucks, as usually. I still don't know how to draw water. Any ideas anyone?
3. The sun isn't perfectly round, and its outline looks strange.
...
Well, your turn to criticize

It's simply uncontrollable, moving on through the sand!

The perspective and shading on this are very cool, and I think the twisted point of view makes any flaws you mentioned in proportion unimportant. I like your style very much. This piece feels very dystopian. Hooray!

Well. You've had finer folks than I to give your crit on this, so I'll just settle back and say yay to that, I suppose. >.>

Lovin' all the little details, and of course I always dig the heavy, dark metal look you put on things: like the gal's armor-stuff, I mean. No happy shiny stuff here, nossah; this is working grade gear. Also, I sort of like the slightly--very slightly--distorted sun and its odd outline. It gives the background a sort of skewed, subtly not-quite-right sense which I think works nicely with the more overt 'wrongness' going on it the midground and the hints of occultism of the foreground. If I look at it too long I get just a little of that cold, damp crawly feeling I've come to associate with too much Lovecraft.

And, like life or the hokey pokey, that's what it's all about. Or something. =B Awesome job. Much better than my crummy '02 stuff, surely. Ever notice how enamored I end up over things you call flaws? O.o;

I knida quit the occult hings after I started having problems with my sleep. Very NASTY problems, I'd say.
It's nice to see that there are people who care to actually look at the pic long enough to see details and stuff. Thank you.
I only did the sketch and outlines in '02. The rest is new. I changed some things, but couldn't do much...

Yeah, I remember reading about that. You doing any better now?
Dude. I admire you, man. I aspire to your level of greatness. Of course I sit around and stare at your pictures until the details have burned little nests of steel and wire into my retinas.
That's true. But I remember the sketch too, from when you posted it in scraps. And it was still better than what I could do. =/ Anyway, even if you think you couldn't change much, the differences are clear. Which is good.

Better? Hmm... well, at least no little astral black persons come to kill me at night. But I kinda lost my sleep I only manage to fall asleep around 8 in the morning. No matter when I go to bed.
Annnd.... you underestimate your abilities. I mean, I don't draw classic anime-pics because I don't like it. It's because I frickin' can't draw 'em Wannabe-artists like so many here on DA just take what they CAN do and improve this single branch. Really GOOD artists can create whatever they want. It's not just speculation, I have some friends who are like this. So there's no real reason for guys like us to get upset about our own art. We're just maggots in the dirt, anyway. Getting used to what you are and having fun is what matters.

Oo, you finished it.
Nothin' to critique aside from what others have already said.
So I'll just say.. I like how creative you got with the costume. That's neat.
And the sun doesn't have to be perfectly round, I said. I mean, who ever really looks at the sun? It's too hot and bright to appear more than a blur to the viewer anyway.

Neg. The sun is that perfect blinding spot which you can stare at for minutes, without ever realizing its true form and still seeing its perfect shape. It's blinding, it's painful, but it still gives life to everything we see around us. It's life, and it's death. It's the thing our lives spin around. It would be better not to try to draw it at all, but art still tries to escape through every pore of an artist's skin, and this very art takes forms which can only be understood by the artist himself. Even when the artist isn't satisfied with the result.

The pic is very good, Im no expert on drawing water (I avoid it entirely) so maybe Ill just agree with what ~Daroneasa said. The perspective for the 'Reality Sucks' poster is a little off though. Since it is at the center of the page, or the 'horizon line', it would be pretty much level, instead of slanted. But if you were to draw it lower down, then it would have been perfect, or if you drew it higher up, ave it slanted the opposite way (I hope Im clear...). Excellent picture though, very well done.

Just as I said before, it was pretty difficult to change anything in the pic since I inked it a long time ago. Anyways, thanks for the comment

Yeah, Im just saying this for future reference. Good pic all around anyway. Im a nitpicker so dont worry about it

Daroneasa [2005-01-03 15:42:44 +0000 UTC]

When drawing water, remember that it is mostly transparent. For example, you should try extending the line of the corner of the wall down, just in a fainter pen. Also, water causes shadows and highlights to ripple across nearby surfaces when it is hit by light. If you added a few really strong highlights to the surface around the ripples, that would also help. Ooh, and distort the bottoms of the bottles and cans that are below the surface slightly....mmm...

Anyway, I like this pic. Nice concept!

Many thanks for the advice!
Too bad I wouldn't be able to use them on this pic... it was already inked when I started shading it, so faint lines and distortion were already impossible to do
