Here is a tutorial on how I do my braids.

Yes the outline of braids look like crimped/wavy hair.

This tutorial is not showing lighting or shadowing this is just basic style and form. Keep in mind you can change the thickness and flow of the braids. The larger the Braid the wider the start end even some to the point they lay more flat till they grow closer to come to a point.
