Description
Completely unconscious Spider-Woman sans mask and wig was posed by Enorma. Drool ran down her chin, the result of Enorma having applied various pressure points which had induced involuntary spasms in the helpless heroine.* * *
DS 3D Tip: When I added Maya the photographer to the scene, my render times slowed to a crawl. I had changed various elements of her from hair to her wardrobe in trying to find the culprit behind the slow down. Turns out it was the Texture Compression settings that were causing a slowdown. They were set at 4096 medium, 6144 high. When I changed it to 1024 medium and high, render times went back to normal. (I am using an "old" Evga Geforce 1080 ti SC card to render. I bought it at launch in April 2017. Even though that card is "old" by gaming standards, DS hasn't changed in that time. It's still DS 4 with some updates. Assets today are generally the exact same size as they were 4 years ago.)
Finally reducing the texture compression to 1024 caused severe artifacting on Spider-Woman's costume. I went back and spot-rendered the costume with the texture compressions raised back to my original settings. All the artifacts disappeared! That's what changing texture compression ultimately does: if you have it set too low (and the default setting is too low), textures will render with more artifacts because they are being compressed.
That's your DS 3D Tip: adjust the texture compression medium and high thresholds under Render Settings/Advanced for better renderings. Keep in mind the caveat that doing so may horrendously affect render times if your scene has too much in it. The tipping point doesn't seem to be much but the impact is extremely significant. If you're not using your CPU to render, checking those boxes might alleviate some of the pain. I generally have CPUs turned off for rendering because your GPU provides the best horsepower for Iray. That way I can still use my PC for anything but most gaming. If you render with GPU and CPU, your PC can become extremely sluggish. Those settings are found in the same tab and directly underneath the ones for texture compression.
