Heres something i just thought, how on earth do they clean out the smokebox! like, im no expert but im pretty sure that would be painful! also how do they get it ope,nΒ  in the real life they have a handel on the smokebox but in the books the have faces, do they like grab them by the nose.Β

Maybe they cough it out, hope engines don't have taste buds!Β Β I don't really see the engines as being alive outside the stories so no real issue but regardless it's one of those can of worms best not to open as otherwise you get into Shed 17 territory pretty fast. That said I do sort of like how close they come to addressing the face issue in 'Out of Puff' yet side step it.

I mean they can sneeze it out, like in Henry's sneeze, I mean it sounds very uncomfortable, for crying out loud it's hot ash spewing from their mouth! Not to mention how creepy it would look if you turn and see a loco face looking at you while it's door isΒ  open!

Nice edit Especially getting his model face behind the chains!

And yet another mystery in the TTTE world XD How is Henry the same engine even though he has a new body? Like, he maintains all his persona, and he still ahs all his memories.Β

SleeperAgent1 In reply to WeatherUS1549 [2018-02-21 14:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, this was hardly photoshopped actually. Basically I crop the additional bits in Preview and then do all my layering on Word Document. I always finish off in Pixelmator but planning ahead before that stage is important.

Yeah it's a bit of a can of worms as unlike in the TV series Henry wasn't merely modified by x amount, instead Henry I is a completely different engine to II. I don't actually consider the NWR's engines to really be sentient outside the stories so that does help this thorny aspect. Americans have a term for this kind of thing actually 'everything below the bell', which means a locomotive is completely rebuilt but on paper is still the same engine, the bell and their identity still being the kept. It's less common here but Great Northern
www.lner.info/locos/A/a1_1.php
would be a good example and on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway River Mite is actually the second, but now the original is just a faded memory. Β  Β Β

I noticed that. I always noticed how different the engines looked between th ebooks and the TV series. Obviously the TV show was merely due to budgeting at that time, and time constraints mostly.

But hte books offer so much more detail to the engines it looks amazing!

And I read about Great Northern.

I imagine the man who stole Sir Gresley's plans for Henry looked at the plans, then final product and was like, "Oh sheet."

SleeperAgent1 In reply to railfanner47 [2018-02-07 15:02:21 +0000 UTC]

"Oh sheet" I like that My take for the 1st Henry is basically the same as most, the heavier 1915 plan except for a few cosmetic changes to the running plate and cab etc as well as a non GNR tender (really need to do a photoshop of it but it's more complicated than converting an A1 photo into Gord).Β

Ah no, I was referring to Henry I. Basically in the RWSverse there are two Henrys, Henry II being the Black 5 reincarnation of the original Β

How in the world did you put Henry's face behind the hooks?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SleeperAgent1 In reply to brianlee7294 [2018-01-27 23:56:08 +0000 UTC]

Very little of this upload was actually photoshopped, instead the main work was done on Word Document. I can go into full detail if you want but basically I take a screenshot or scan of the things I wish to include on the master image and then crop out the undesired areas before inserting them on top. If there are things to reinstall in the foreground (such as the chains) then I just do the same with the first round of added bits, scan/screenshot them, crop out the background sections and then layer them in.
It takes a bit of practice and experimentation but mostly patience is the key. If having a go I recommend starting with simpler images, say just a basic face plant job where the loco is mostly head on (more side on images are trickier). Β

Always nice to hear Very little of this was actually done on Photoshop (Pixelmator in my case), as I would say about 90%+ was done via Word Document which is how I layer cropped screenshots and scanned images. It took me a while to work out all the tricks I usually do in my edits but it basically comes down to finding the right donors (i.e. the face) and just experimenting around a bit to see what works. You are very welcome. My gallery is not original eighter, iΒ΄ve drawn from our beautiful deviantart.com artists photos, I like my gallery, but no originality or creativeness, I hope I can manage and in the future draw someting from my very own mind.

And donΒ΄t worry, your creation is beautiful, this is all that matters.

WOW! How'd you hide Henry's face behind the chains without any errors? And don't tell me this is not an edit of a real photograph.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SleeperAgent1 In reply to lag-roil [2017-02-22 12:12:35 +0000 UTC]

I do all my layering and a certain level of cropping on Word Document. Basically I blank out the smokebox area (something most people don't bother to do, which leaves the door hinges exposed) then add the donor face that best suits the main image. After i'm happy I add any foreground objects if they were there to start with. I can forward you a more in depth walk through via a SiF PM that I typed up for ToyFredd if you like but with the chain I broke it down into about four different sections and carefully cropped each one before layering it, using the master photo as a guide for the spacing out. The trick to cropping well is to scan the main photo or painting and then zoom in a bit before taking a Screenshot. The trade off is that you have more surface area to carefully crop around but it means potential mistakes are minimised. Β  Β  Β Β

Regaurdless of your opinion on Henry 1 and 2 and weather they are the same engine I think we can all say that it's Henry as far as the soul of the engine goes. My theory was always that Henry's original Smokebox was the same size as a Black Five's and so his smokebox is all that remains of the old design allowing the mind and spirit of the old Green engine who once stuck in a tunnel to keep going.

I have a similar story for a character from my Cobden Valley Railway in that the engine in question is the 0-8-0 Hecate locomotive after the terrible accident said engine in real life perished in rebuilt into a SR Z class 0-8-0 salvaging her smokebox and fitting it to a incomplete Z. She would of course be the sister of my main shunter but now she would be a new shape but the same engine.

Well originally the face was looking directly at the chain in front of it, which looked a bit odd. I figure Charles Hatt, who was working at Crewe in 1935 (or someone under his orders) was taking the photo for NWR posterity and it's only natural that Henry would be looking at the camera Β

Eh?.....well that's the 'background' story for the edit and i'm sticking to it Β Β but don't worry I can take a knock. I know what you mean about the eye though. I did dampen down the focus on the pupil as it was intense but as I afterwards tend to mess about the screenshot settings a bit on 'Preview' just before choosing to upload the finished piece it can be a little tricky to judge while still doing the photoshopping side of things. Basically you win some, you lose someΒ Β Β

Rolf, with IoS's notes as well the whole thing does have shades of The Vale of Reidiol's two No.1213s, except in later days he still kept the original's identity (and maybe a few token parts a la The Great Bear being 'rebuilt' into Viscount Churchill ).Β
