Mheetu was born incredibly sickly. The pregnancy was a little more than tragic. He was meant to have a twin, but she didn't live for very long after being born. Her name would've been Nadra. Mheetu himself was thought to also be lost, one of his little legs in bad condition from being in the womb, But Rafiki was there to save him, at the huge cost of his leg. Sarafina remains eternally thankful for at least one of the twins coming out alive and sought to protect the weak little cub from then on.

Though Mheetu grew up sickly and sheltered, meant to stick close to his mother and the other lionesses for his own safety, he turned out to be a very optimistic cub. Frequently he would attempt to tag along with his older sister (born a season earlier than him) and Simba. Kids are awful about differences if not taught correctly and well, Simba is a royal who was already told he was higher than others. Nala was better about it but even still Mheetu slowed them down and would give in very easily to Simba's sentiments towards leaving him behind. So the duo found it annoying when he asked to come with them on their adventures. There was seldom anyone Mheetu wanted to hang out with them Prince Simba and his big sister Nala, whom he admired for being so headstrong, so it hurt to be left out all the time and to never be though of by them. Despite this, he never held much ill will towards them, rather blindly.

During Scar's reign, Mheetu was not as picked on as one would expect. This is because Scar himself was a sickly cub that no one thought much of, seeing himself in Mheetu and quietly allowing him to still be fed as rations started to go to hyenas. I'd like to clarify that Scar is not Mheetu's father, as is the common headcanon, but had Mheetu overcome his sickness sooner and not been so stubbornly attached to Sarafina and Nala, he would have groomed him to be an heir. This was, however, far before his true spiral into madness during his reign and short-lived freakout about his legacy and he decided to lay with lionesses and have his only two biological heirs (Dhaifu and nuka). I wanna delve into mheetu and Scar's odd relationship in the future.

This was when Nala started to care more for Mheetu and be more protective of him, with him being a weaker lion that needed proper sustenance, often giving him a lot of her food to keep up his strength as well as attempting to point him in the opposite direction from Scar, whom she could see as the monster he was far easier than her gullible brother.

It was only when Nala left to find help that a teenaged Mheetu would feel some sort of resentment. He knew it was selfish but at that point they only had so many lions and it felt as though all that rejection from when they were cubs and constantly forgiveness it was being thrown back in his face. This was furthered by the fact that Simba was not actually dead but had run away.

Where was Mheetu during the uprising? Why, fighting the hyenas, of course! whereas Tojo (one of the only other males still in the Pridelands during this time) was a pacifist, Mheetu was eager to aid his pridesisters in the fight, regardless of his petty feelings. By great luck and prior training from Nala, he was successful in his encounters and came out uninjured, gaining keen admiration from the pride for his skills.

The resentment was quickly superseded by joy when Scar's empire fell. Mheetu would keep his distance from Simba and Nala afterward, but eventually Simba would approach and apologize for how he acted as a cub. He, Mheetu, and Nala would soon come to talk things out and at last, Mheetu was able to voice his cubhood frustrations. Simba and Nala reassure him that he will never be forgotten or left behind in their kingdom ever again.

Soon after the war is over, Mheetu would have a cub with Chagua, a nonbinary lion, with whom he'd been in a relationship since they were teens; a boy named Kopa -- more on him here.

EDIT (9/12/22): cleaned up the story a bit and changed a few details to fit with the kopa profile better. and fixed mheetu's proportions, made his head smaller, fixed his hip bone, and gave him a better "mane." that last one's been bugging me for a while lol.

the first of many character profiles i want to do to expand on the characters in my fanon!

so, on my mheetu's design:

firstly, he's based on a little edit i did last year which you can see here ! i made him a maneless lion because i don't think i ever imagined him with one. there's also a mheetu design here on da that i took inspiration from but can't really find? if you know please comment! anyway, i'm considering making his and nala's dad a tsavo lion. he's likewise also based on the cub seen in the i just can't wait to be king book.

he's also very spotty (i mean both in and out of cubhood), something that he not only also gets from his dad but from sarafina too! this is something kion also inherits. it's possible i may change his eye color so he doesn't look too much like nala but i liked the thought of them being similar. thought it'd be cute but i don't wanna confuse anyone.

i had every intention of not making mheetu scar's son while also referencing scar's model sheet while drawing him. i wanted a good mixture of nala's strong physique and scar's waifishness. to me dat's mheetu baby. he also has colored toes to make him a bit more distinct from nala who kinda just. owns colorless toes when it comes to tlk designs.
