Description A little tutorial/comic about how to eat cat-tails that I made for a local restaurant recently. My dad, an edible-plant aficionado, has made a habit of bringing them weird food to try, and they fell in love with the cat-tails he brought. They are, however, a little bit confusing to eat. So, this.

Now you guys can all eat cat-tails, too! Go out and harvest them any time in July. The ones a centimeter across or less are the edible ones. Then boil them in salty water, and butter them and eat them. Delicious, nutritious, and very hipster. C:

Thanks to my brother for fixing a spelling error with his crazy Photoshop magic! Showed me just how incompetent I am! XD

Just show her all the Google results, they'll prove you're not just eating something you found in a ditch. XD You do find them in ditches, though, so that may be hard to explain...

slight-obstruction In reply to AilovU [2012-02-03 00:55:16 +0000 UTC]

It's legit. They're swamp plants that are edible all through July. Sounds creepy, though. XD

AilovU In reply to slight-obstruction [2012-02-03 02:39:23 +0000 UTC]

But...wut
I know what they are cause I grew up in farmland and I used to drag them on the ground and have sword fights with them
It's really odd to think you can eat them
I mean
they're basically brown dandelion sticks

slight-obstruction In reply to AilovU [2012-02-03 03:20:43 +0000 UTC]

XD Okay, there have been a few people misunderstanding what they are, so...
That's what they look like after they're edible. At that point... do not eat them. It'd be really poofy and gross.

Wait, are cat tails the ones that are in the swamps and watery areas?

I didn't know you can eat those! *wants to try it now*

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

slight-obstruction In reply to redwolf21 [2011-09-03 21:03:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are. The ones that end up looking poofy and brown. But you have to eat them when they're still small and green. You should try it. They are delicious.
There are actually a lot of ways to use cat-tails for food (list: [link] ) , but this is the best one, I think.

No problem!
You've got a while to convince them; they won't be ready to eat until around late June next year.

I always loved seeing them in the marsh as we rode ATVs out hunting. I love when they get old, puff up, and blow away on the breeze. I never knew they were edible; that sure puts a new spin on the classic food fight.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

slight-obstruction In reply to auxiliary-character [2011-07-07 17:21:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, most people don't know they're good for anything but picking them apart when they get all puffy. You should try them! :'D

jocosejoni [2011-07-05 16:02:46 +0000 UTC]

.... Wh...What do they taste like?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

slight-obstruction In reply to jocosejoni [2011-07-05 16:51:17 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... They taste like... kind of like pine nuts, but the texture's not the same. They're really good. They are flowers technically, but they aren't sweet, they have more of a nutty flavor. And they taste best with butter and salt. They're quite unique, basically. XD
