At least that thing isn't going to run out of habitable surface area anytime soon.

Eventually they will build a ring around the entire universe.

Oops I was mistaken. It would be an entire shell world around the universe. I called it a Superduperomegasupramundane Planet.

How would such a structure deal with the expansion of the universe?

They would use their technology to stop it.

That is impressive. It would require at least the mass of a galaxy, to create that.
I have in mind (but not sure if I actually would use it in my writing) a galactic Dyson Sphere. Although it would not be a complete sphere, because they built it around two colliding galaxies. However they do possess the capability of guiding the movement of stars, so there's no concerns about collisions....
*edit* Length of 'days'? Looks like they'd run thousands of years..... hm. unless those panels are stationary, and the dark zones are used for industry only or primarily.

Yep. Probably more. The Night Panels travel faster than than speed of light, because this is a Kardashev a billion civilization, and they can do these sorts of things. Also my oc can beat up yours.
Is a galactic Dyson sphere one that orbits around a galaxy? Why would you build that instead of a regular Dyson sphere? A Dyson sphere seems like something that might naturally be built as people needed more living space and tried to collect energy from stars, a galactic Dyson sphere is something that could only ever be built on purpose, and there's no reason to do it instead of making billions of smaller ones. (I'm assuming you're talking about a swarm and not an actual sphere btw, if you're talking about a solid sphere then it's basically the same as this ringworld, which you've already pointed out some of the problems of.)

Can he, now? that could be fun. (point me to him?)
I have been thinking it is not a solid sphere, but more like a series of shell-like pieces, loosely bound together. Since there'd be billions of stars near the surfaces, there would be constant light... my thinking was that they'd be able to render portions of the upper atmosphere ... I hate losing words Just when I need them.... Opaque, for short periods of time over each (planet-sized) region.
It is just an idea.... the Lir will eventually number 900 Trillion, but even that many could likely fit into a small portion of such a surface. Rather, they have an entire universe to use as their own....

Niven's ringworld would already require materials stronger than molecular bonds to keep itself from flying apart. I think there are less ridiculous ways of showing immense scale. I like the idea of an atmosphere that can be controlled by technology though. (Utility Fog?)
Edit: Well, this website www.xenology.info/Xeno/19.2.5.… proposes megastructures a thousand light-years across, so maybe you could get away with it.

Actually, if one can control the Strong Force between atoms..... but, No. I think I would leave out a Dyson Sphere and work on taking the colliding galaxies and make them do a different dance. Of course only a very few Lir actually Live the length of time it would require for the dance to become apparent.
Utility fog, neat idea *g* Still at a loss for that damned word.... where you turn light at a 90-degree angle(?) and it cancels out...

Moving galaxies could potentially be done using current science, if you built a Shkadov thruster around every star.
Phase cancellation?

Well. Lir science will be quite a bit ahead of that. One idea would be to direct the gravity well of the star... it would 'roll' along the curve in space it creates. (just thinking off the top of my head).
We already have lenses that do that*, and have for decades. Just can't think of the damned word!
* - I did it in class when I was kid decades ago: shine a light thru one lens. Rotate the next lens out 90 degrees, light cannot filter thru it. I am guessing both lenses were of the same type, can't recall.

I found out about another huge megastructure in fiction: Bolder's Ring from the Xeelee books.

Googling "Bolder's Ring" was a good decision. Just the perfect level of megastructure insanity.

Oh My God that is gigantic!
'escape the universe.' I suppose I need to read those books now. But it is interesting that the Scope of something like a Galaxy-sized Dyson sphere is not entirely out of the question.
I've been thinking on your question in notes. Working on my response. And Thanks! The conversation Kavus and God were going to have, was Weak Sauce compared to what I have come up with now.
