Description

"Sigh, it will be such a hassle to swap the disc out once it's done with it..."

HyperDisc supercomputers can be troublesome to use at times but just think of just how much space they have! Perfect for lengthy and complex programs!

A photobash at a comfortable pace of 2h, done for practice as I've never properly done this before.

It's pretty rough still but I wanted to get into a better understanding of the workflows first before putting all too much effort into it.

I told you I would get to that and that this deviation was a warmup practice.

- "Ok, but why this motive?"

The general idea behind this was an "what if"-kind of sci fi scenario, extrapolated from the early 1980s when CDs were very hyped and a brand new media (or rather music) storage type.

So, I asked myself: What could 80s sci fi do with it? Of course make it huge!

Originally I was considering to go with some design like the Cray supercomputers, but this wouldn't have offered a good look at the CD - pardon, I meant HD - in detail.

So I've stuffed it all on a wall in a sterile room (hence their clothing and the shiny surfaces).

The HD could be purely optical - or magneto-optical (like MDs). Up to interpretation, but the mild similarities with a HDD are left there on purpose.

- "A-ha..? So why a CD then?"

Now you may end up wondering: Why not go with a big harddrive then? Real life has done that at that time without even being sci fi, so I saw no need to tackle it.

Apart from that harddrives meant for supercomputers were still big (albeit not as big as that thing up there) and had comparable amounts of storage to a CD released in '82 if I'm not mistaken - and lasers are much more futuristic after all.

So how to get more storage? Make that CD bigger!! Oh, and rainbow patterns... Love that about CDs.

- "And how?"

Here are the resources I used if you're curious (sorted by their relevance and use in the final image):

Of course I painted over elements and smudged them.

Made with GIMP 2.10.

I hope you like it!
