Description Hi all!

I had a challenge posted on my miniature group at the beginning of the month and this is my submission.  The theme was how small can you create something and still see the details.  Here I have a pig, bunny, cat, and dog.  I again used a pencil for scale as I haven't thought of a better item to show scale yet.  Any ideas? (Items that are universal in size is hard to think of!)  Let me know if you guys have any ideas please!! It is actually quite difficult to think of ideas on how to take pictures showing scale without my hand being all up in the picture haha.

Welp, hope you guys like this piece!

Fortunately your hand is a nice one. Try a matchstick or a paper clip if you really need to change from the pencil. Coins tend to be too regional. These little guys are superb Mel. You have a talent for really tiny, just look at your Koi.

Than kyou!! Paper clips have different sizes too . coins are definitely too regional =] haha

Meep. So tiny XD The whole sitting on a pencil thing reminds me of the world's smallest hummingbird, the bee hummingbird .

Anyway, a ruler is pretty universal, though using objects can seem so obstructive to the picture. Maybe a faint grid background?

SmallCreationsByMel In reply to OdeeQuack [2014-03-03 17:27:28 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh the hummingbird is sooo tiny!! So cuteee .  I know ruler would work, but I wanted objects that would add to the picture so that it is "cute" haha.  Sometimes a ruler doesn't look as nice and when taking pictures super close up, you see all the marks and dents on the ruler lol.  Grid might work as a background, like graph paper ?

A ruler, really.  Anything that measures in universal increments (inches or centimeters) or is ONLY made in very specific increments is going to be the only thing that ALWAYS will be the same size no matter where you are.  Even things like paper clips, sewing pins and other things have varying sizes.  Legos is a good idea.  You could even have a piece of cloth or something that you put in all of your pictures and simply state how big it is in the description.  this would provide relative scale not just to the real world, but between your sculptures as well.

Sewing pins could work .  Your idea of a piece of cloth measured out is cool too .  Thank you so much for your suggestions!

That is totally insane!!!  Your workmanship is always amazing but this scale is ridiculous, congratulations Mel.  And I love the pencil - everyone knows what size one of those is.  Other universal objects?

Wine cork / egg cup / computer mouse / cutlery / cotton reel (spool) / dressmaking pins / match box / ring, like a wedding ring / postage stamp / tea bag / vegetables and fruit ...  It's hard isn't it?

SmallCreationsByMel In reply to MayEbony [2014-03-03 17:30:01 +0000 UTC]

Oooh a postage stamp could be a cute background too , especially when the piece is so small. Thanks for all your suggestions!
