Y'know, I don't really dedicate time to deviantART anymore, but I always come back periodically to check if you've put new music up. Still love listening to the idlejamm and Floating Couch tracks and I'm looking forward to listening to this whole thing tonight. Thanks

You'll be happy to know (if you like this album), that I'm 3 tracks into a follow-up album to this.

Thanks for the feedback, it's good to know there are some listeners out there.

Oh man that's great news! I had good timing this time around then! haha.

So far, my favourite tracks are: 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10. That sounds like a lot but it's hard to pick a favourite.

I can't say I'm music savvy as far as technical terms and such go, but I listen to music mostly because of the way it makes me feel.

So I apologize in advance for not being able to provide you with a musically-educated critique.

I just want to say that the reason why I keep coming back to your music is how it feels like it tells a story simply through sounds. A progression, a journey, from point A to point B but traversing through all the process in between.

I am in the process of becoming an illustrator. This is a field where you must often express a strong concept or message that must read well without need for words.

I think that for me, this is what your music does. Almost as if you were telling us a story, giving us a message or just simply telling us about your day if you wanted, or about a dream you had, or about the world of your imagination.

But even then I don't want to over ANALize it haha. I don't even want to look at the titles and think "oh is that what this song is about?" I just like experiencing your music, letting it speak its way into me.

So much thanks, again.

Hi Dan, I've downloaded your new work but only commented now because I wanted to listen carefully to it before saying something!
I found the absence of a singer really in line with the atmosphere you're aiming to recreate and this also helps your music becoming the soundtrack of a design process or at least a focused state of mind.
I realized the passing of time only when the record got to the end and Recursive (which by the way reminds me of Battlestar Galactica opening theme at the very beginning, dunno why) started again. And this means this record is really good!
If you want to get deeper in detail on the songs, just don't hesitate to ask, I'd be glad to speak about it!
Thanks again for sharing good music.

Thanks much for the review, and I'm glad you waited until after hearing it to give it a fair shake. I'm glad you like it as well. Hopefully with more spare time, I will be able to make more tunes for another new album. Thanks again!

You're welcome! And that would be great, I'm sure many would appreciate a new release.
At the same time hearing this makes me think of a possibility... I will tell you about in a few days time... For now, CIAO!

Antimentality is definitely my favorite track on the disc. It's very well put together, and the track layering is very well envisioned. The rest of the album is definitely spectacular, but I had to tell you how much I enjoyed this specific track. Thanks once again for all the great free content.

smashmethod In reply to FlamingNuke [2009-10-22 13:41:46 +0000 UTC]

No probs, thanks for the feedback. Antimentality was actually written at the same time as Recursive, making it/them the first song made for this album.

A lot of good music. My favourite is 'Costigan', followed fairly closely by 'The Lineage' and 'Recursive'.
Regarding Track 3, if it can actually be called music (it can), it's good.

smashmethod In reply to DragonlordPhoenix [2010-01-27 17:14:07 +0000 UTC]

You're after my own heart, as your favorites from this album line up almost exactly with mine.

Though for sentimental reasons and the back story of how it came to be, I usually put Recursive first (first on the album as well), followed by Costigan, and The Lineage.

Thanks for the feedback.

It's already quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

So what made you get into composing music? I've loved your artwork, but I wasn't expecting his at all. I was pleasantly surprised, really.

smashmethod In reply to derekoe0091 [2009-09-12 20:35:45 +0000 UTC]

Music has always been a hobby much like art, it just is way more time consuming to write a song than it is to make a simple image. Plus I've always felt that music provides more of a story-telling, moving experience than visual art, so I take more joy in producing a finished song than I do a finished image. My older submissions are littered with other releases of music that wern't nearly as involved as this effort, primarily due to time of software constraints.

Fuck yes another album! Ever since first listening to Vertical Noise, your music holds a special place in my heart and on my iPod. I disagree with ~bodom... I think lyrics and singing would just ruin and obscure your music. I much prefer the occasional distant-sounding TV/radio recording excerpts that you use.

Some of my favorites in the past:
Neogenesis
Arrival
Motion (Kuzma's)
Euphoria
Matoya's Cave
Terra's Theme
Flyby
Motion (yours)
Descending The Candy Cane Umbrella
Bridge Title
Letters From Home
The Ride With the Lights

My Favorites from It Only Ends Once:
They All Go Back
***One Story - LOVE the Waking Life excerpt, fits perfectly
Costigan
Away From Me

On a side note, "Good to See You, Lem" brings a song to my forethought... "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth" by Four Tet. You should give it a listen! In fact, this album has many similar qualities to Four Tet's "Rounds" album, you'd probably like it if you aren't already aware of it.

Overall, a fucking kick-ass album! A lot of instant classics in here... definitely staying in the music collection indefinitely

To be honest, it's surprising to see someone who knows about as much about my music catalog as I do. It's weird, but very flattering. I'm glad you enjoy so many different tunes I've put out. Personally I think of this batch as the first real concerted effort into a coherent album, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this album versus previous releases, since you seem very caught up on what I've done.

As for the Four Tet, I've listened to that album (and others) many times, so maybe it worked it's way into my subconscious.

Thanks again for the feedback too, it's nice to know my releases have a fan

krazykarl In reply to smashmethod [2009-09-21 14:42:26 +0000 UTC]

As for how this album compares to your previous releases, I sensed a conscious effort to make all the songs sound like they came from the same album. I could tell you were going for a more uniform sound. Like a scatter plot whose points are tightly packed, few songs from this album stray from the group. I wouldn't call it a detriment, but at times I felt like the song was forced to fill a mold at the behest of sounding like the other songs, unable to express its own individuality. Kind of like school uniforms: uniformity allows the individuals to more efficiently fulfill their purpose (a more congruent album) but at the cost of not being able to express individuality (songs begin to sound like one another). Heh, funny way to look at it, but I'm just trying to say.... Perhaps you should loosen the dress code a little bit

I've only listened to the first two songs, but i've fallen in love with them. Have you thought in adding lyrics and a singer? The first song would sound fucking brilliant with a person singing it.

Well done!! ^_^

smashmethod In reply to bodom [2009-09-08 17:10:51 +0000 UTC]

I think it would be interesting to try, however I have 2 problems: 1. finding a singer, and 2. writing lyrics that aren't horrible.

Thanks for the feedback

Ok, so I've listened to half of it. According to last.fm, I'm the only person that's listened to it xD.

I also tagged your genre as instrumental and atmospheric

My first tags to last.fm too

smashmethod In reply to sinbad269 [2010-01-27 17:08:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for tagging it. I like using last.fm to check stats, but it's also kind of discouraging because some of the people who listen aren't registered on that site, obviously.

I usually go by album and song downloads from the bandwidth charts. So far I'd say it's been pretty well received.

Thanks for the interest.

SonicSaturn In reply to smashmethod [2009-09-07 21:21:47 +0000 UTC]

i think it's probably 3, although it's quite tricky to pick one out as I was just listening to all as it went, as the music goes from one track to the next quite un-noticably (which i really really like in albums), and I wasn't paying attention to what son was currently being played (i tend to work out favourites over a week or 2 lol)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

smashmethod In reply to SonicSaturn [2009-09-10 17:38:31 +0000 UTC]

It makes me glad to hear that, because on final listen, the one track I felt was maybe a tad less engaging than the others was #3. I still like it, I was just concerned others might not, so to hear that it's tentatively your favorite really helps quell my concerns.

Happy listening

smashmethod In reply to cagdon [2010-01-27 17:05:41 +0000 UTC]

Hey, sorry for the extremely late reply, I must have missed the question the first time.

I don't actually play anything in these songs as it's all written in the computer, though I have been known to dabble with piano when not at the computer. Since everything you write in the computer is formatted like playing a piano, it's quite easy to bring in new instruments.

Thanks for the comment.
