Description This is what the locket looks like full opened. Again, sterling silver outer, copper pages, fine silver centerball chain.

The pages say, from front to back, Frustration, Anger, Lonely, Pain, Hate, Self-Destruction. The idea behind the piece is how you present a happy face to the world while holding "negative" emotions inside. Photos of the individual pages can be found in my Scraps area.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize how much of the bottom of the pages would be covered up since I'd never made a mechanism like that before so some of them are hard to see- the Lonely page especially.

i would love to see this creation done as a positive perspective- rather than negatives inside- create positives, as it's such a beautful piece that should be full of joy, bliss, peace, love .... so it makes you feel good to wear it and acts as a reminder of all the beatuful elements inside ourselves.

Im starting my masters in jewellery & metalwork and im following on my work from my BA on large lockets so I can really appreciate the level of work and effort that goes into pieces like this.

Ive only got one example on my page at the moment so let me know what you think!

This is really one of the most evocative and beautiful pieces of jewellery/work i have ever seen. I don't think there can be many people who have not experienced at least one of the emotions contained and hidden inside it. i wish you all the best with your studies and the career you WILL have afterwards. Just keep going with it. You are certainly very talented.

I just love the fact that even when open for viewing -- those internal emotions are never 100% viewable, kind of like "even if I tell what I am thinking, you will never fully comprehend it."

smithing-chick In reply to hetmana [2005-05-13 07:39:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm playing even more with that idea in one of my summer projects.

Partially inspired by all the insanity that erupted with a certain fellow known only as N on my LJ. Someday he'll figure out that he doesn't have me nearly as figured out as he thinks he does.

But the new locket's going to be based on the lotus flower & have several layers of pages. The very center of the flower won't open at all. It'll be pierced & you'll be able to see glimpses of a cast figure that I'll be putting inside, but not the whole thing.

It's not going to have a clasp, either- the pages will open & move while it's being worn.

I'm just getting into more mechanical stuff, m'self. Prior to that locket I'd only done hinges on one other piece & they weren't nearly so small. I'm really enjoying them.

You should do a search for Cappy Counard- she does the most amazing little boxes & containers. She's one of my profs as school. Her work will either insire you or make you feel like a total hack. Tends to do both at the same time to me.

LMAO it inspires while making you feel like a hack. Thats pretty cool, i'll look her up. I love mechanical stuff. I would do all sorts of crazy stuff if I had the money and time. You should keep it up cause it came out really good. I would love to see any other mechanical looking thing you have done.
