Description
Outside, the sunset reached its peak, bathing Normandie in a burning glow and filling the room with its warmth. She stepped forward, closer to the windows, and slowly lifted her hand to touch the dirty glass.
“I am Normandie, ship of light,” she told the gorgeous Le Havre sunset. “I am too good to let the fire have any power over me. I am stronger than it is. I can control it, and I will. I will conquer my pain.”
The sunset’s colors began to fade, as if the sun itself were submitting to her. Normandie lowered her hand away from the glass.
“I am Normandie, ship of light,” she repeated, “and nothing can hurt me.”
I’m making one of my boat stories - The Trophy and the Fire - into a zine! It’s a class project; the class in question is fiction writing, and the final project involves making a zine out of one of the stories I’ve workshopped in class. I’ve revised the story a great deal, so Normandie is less likeable (and a bit less funny) but more consistent in the new version; I’ll release that version soon, so stay tuned!
Here are the notes:
-The lighting was really tough! I had a hard time figuring out how to do it, but I think it came out looking pretty nice! It required several layers with various different blending effects - and that’s not including the regular shading - to get it looking right.
-The window should actually be dirtier, as it’s a disused, weathered house, and by the ocean no less! However, I made it considerably less grimy here so you can see Normandie more clearly, as she’s the star of the show.
-This is actually the second time I’ve drawn Normandie with funky orange lighting! She just lends herself well to that, I guess.
-She looks a bit sad here; that’s representative of how the sunset reminds her of her home in Le Havre, France. It’s been a long time - at least by her standards - since she’s been back, and the story touches on her homesickness a bit, so I drew her with a wistful expression. I also considered a look of quiet resolve, but the sadder expression added to the overall emotional weight of the piece.
-The room she’s in here will eventually become the sunroom mentioned elsewhere in the Unsinkable continuity; it’s featured in its refurbished form in April 14th (Fire and Ice) , for example, albeit with little in the way of a description.
-This is probably my most atmospheric piece to date!

This piece was created to be the cover of my first-ever zine, which features an updated version of The Trophy and the Fire and which I distributed to my creative writing classmates.
